The Great Medical Money Sucking Machine

Feminist Mormon Housewives

I went to my OB yesterday to get a new IUD (I’ve had the Minera for 5 years and I hate  it), and before I could see the doctor they ushered into the billing office and asked me to pay $1,200 up front (because my insurance sucks). Since I do not even remotely have $1,200 (ha ha ha ha ha ha), I do not have a new IUD. They did offer to remove my old one for a mere $300, wasn’t that sweet? I am lucky enough to have insurance (even though it sucks), and overall my family is pretty healthy (i do have a pesky chronic disease, but it’s not intensively medicated or monitored by anyone mostly because there’s nothing they can do), and still we are paying ten percent of our income on medical costs (plus another 7% if you include insurance premiums).

Can I ask, what is it about fifteen minutes with a physicians assistant and a small piece of plastic that I could buy in Mexico for $5.00 that adds up to $1,200? And why isn’t someone going to prison for this travesty of a health care system?

I mean, I know that health care costs have spiraled out of control in America. I understand that we pay 70% more than every other industrialized country for our health care and yet are not 70% more healthy, but rather significantly sicker than all those countries with scary scary universal health care (pay tons more for bunches less! free markets rock!).

But why? I’m so angry about it I can’t see straight, but I don’t know who to be mad at exactly. I know the insurance companies are bleeding us dry for huge profits, I know the pharmaceutical executives are going to rot in hell for their crimes (as a Mormon I don’t believe in hell, with the exception of this special hell for child molesters and pharmaceutical executives) . But I’m willing to spread blame around. I know conservatives like to blame litigious culture and the resulting insurance rates, but while some reform might help, mathematically speaking this can’t be blamed for most or even much of the problem. So where is this medical vacuum sucking my money?
