Assembling six doctors to assess a pregnant woman’s request for abortion was a “sick joke” and would be “abusive”, a perinatal psychiatrist, who deals with the mental health of pregnant women has said.
Under the terms of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013, where there is a “real and substantial” risk to the life of the woman due to the risk of suicide, three consultant doctors will be required to certify the need for a termination of pregnancy. The three doctors should comprise one obstetrician and two psychiatrists.

DES should be a wake up call for women on synthetic hormones… and who are considering getting the HPV vaccine, Gardasil or Cervarix. Here’s the good news: anti-choice legislators enacted fewer abortion restrictions in 2012 than in 2011. The bad news? They still managed to devise a shitton of ways to restrict abortion access, particularly for low-income women, and no laws were enacted to actually improve access to abortion, family planning, or sex ed. Better luck next year?
It should be no wonder then that, during a press conference promoting all of the alleged social and emotional ills that have riddled the country in the 40 years since Roe v. Wade was decided, that an AUL representative argued that abortion should be all together banned so that women can prove that they don’t need it.
