An HPV vaccine that protects women from most varieties of genital warts and cervical cancer, has been approved for use by boys and men in Canada.

The vaccine, Gardasil, has been approved for boys and men ages nine through 26, the same age range as its approval in girls and women. In 2007, the federal government announced $300 million in funding to deliver in-school vaccination clinics.

We’ve arrived at a point in human history where our health is assaulted like never before. The phthalates that soften our shower curtains and the bisphenols that shatterproof our water bottles are endocrine disruptors that, research is now showing, may lead to lower testosterone in boys and girls who can look forward to breast cancer.

It seems as though you have to be filthy rich or join a commune to eat decent food these days; the choice of a new generation is between aspartame and high fructose corn syrup. The pills we take to quit smoking make us consider plunging from high roof tops instead. And these are just the plagues of the developing world.

In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Gardasil, the first-ever vaccine for females 9 to 26 years old, designed to
prevent just 4 of the over 100 strains of the human papillomavirus. Only two percent of undiagnosed HPV infections lead to cervical cancer, a rare form of cancer.

The 1976 swine flu vaccine program resulted in hundreds of cases of a rare nerve disease called Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). This condition results in numbness and weakness in the lower limbs, which spreads upwards through the body. Some patients require hospitalization and artificial respiration due to an inability to control breathing. The paralysis associated with this condition may resolve over time, but nerve damage can also be permanent.

Ever since the HPV prevention drug Gardasil hit the market in 2006, I’ve been very suspicious. The marketing campaign says that it is the “only vaccine for cervical cancer,” but what Gardasil actually protects against are some strains of HPV, a sexually transmitted disease that may cause cervical cancer. This is very misleading, not to mention that it is possible to prevent HPV infections through safe sex practices. What also got my dander was how quickly it got pushed on the public.

Obesity can cause cancers, says study

Over 100,000 types of cancers are caused by obesity, according to an American study.

Excess body fat makes a person vulnerable to cancer by increasing the amount of hormones like estrogen circulating in the body and disrupting how the body processes insulin, which is linked to higher risk of cancer. It also triggers low-grade inflammation in the body, which is increasingly being found to play a role in cancer.
