The Gardasil Debate: Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer world-wide. (Bridges, 2008) It is also the leading cause of cancer related deaths in the developing countries. (National Cervical Cancer Coalition) Ireland has one of the highest cervical cancer death rates in Western Europe and this rate is increasing by 1.5% per year. (The Irish Cancer Society, 2008 and Condon, D. 2005.) The implementation of a nationwide cervical screening programme for all women aged 25-60 years is called upon- urgently. Such a programme would reduce the incidence of cervical cancer by 80 %.( I.C.S. 2007) In the meantime the introduction of the Gardasil injection targeted initially towards the 9-26year old paves the way for reductions in the current trends for the future.

Push to expand Gardasil vaccine to boys as throat cancer linked to HPV

There is a push to expand the distribution of the Gardasil vaccine, manufactured by Merck & Company, to boys, as recent studies are linking the development of throat cancers to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Gardasil is currently marketed as a treatment for girls and young women for the prevention of cervical cancer, which also is caused by HPV. HPV is a sexually transmitted virus. Gardasil protects against four types of HPV, two of which are most often linked to the development of cervical cancer.

A vaccine used to prevent a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cancer in women is now available for men.

Human papillomavirus causes most cases of genital warts in men and women and cervical cancer in women. The HPV vaccine prevents against four strains of the virus that cause a majority of the diseases.
