Felicia-Maine: Felicia was always the picture of health. She was actively involved in sports, but baseball was her favorite. In fact, her team won the County Championship. That was before Gardasil.
In February of 2009, at the age of 16, Felicia received her first, and only, shot of the HPV vaccine Gardasil. Mom was with her in the room.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A vaccine designed to prevent cervical cancer also may protect females from post-surgical recurrence of the disease, according to researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
A new study shows that the Gardasil vaccine reduces the likelihood of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related disease recurring after teen and adult women already have had surgery to remove cancer or certain pre-cancerous changes, said Warner Huh, M.D., an associate professor in the UAB Division of Gynecologic Oncology and lead presenter on the study.

Gardasil is a vaccine that is designed to protect against several strains of human papilloma virus that have been linked to cervical cancer. That does not necessarily mean these strains cause cervical cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society, cervical cancer rates dropped by by 74% between 1955 and 1992, primarily due to more aggressive screening.

When Marian Greene’s daughter, Holly Runstrom, 18, fell seriously ill nearly two years ago, there wasn’t a doctor or a test that could tell them what was wrong.”I would sit there literally 20 hours a day, unless we were at the doctor’s office, and research and research,” Greene said.

More high-risk cases of human papilloma virus (HPV) — that causes cervical cancer — can be detected by offering home-testing kits to women who do not come forward for cervical screening, reported the British Medical Journal Online on Friday. While screening and vaccination in developed countries have reduced cases of death from cervical cancer, it continues to be the number one cancer among women in India with 1.32 lakh new cases every year. Of the 2.7 lakh cervical cancer deaths each around the world in 2008, 74,118 occurred in India.

A guest post from the Immunisation Advisory Centre, following recent reports in the press questioning the safety of the Gardasil vaccine.
Recently we have seen more examples of vaccine safety surveillance data being misinterpreted by both members of the public and the media. This misinterpretation of adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) data can perpetuate fear and confusion in our communities. Sensible safety surveillance data has been presented in a manner that claims the HPV vaccine Gardasil is the cause of many serious, adverse ‘reactions’. This is false.
