SafeMinds has launched a new website, SmartVax, to change the discourse on vaccines in a manner that will create a positive environment where consumers are empowered and scientists are encouraged to pursue the necessary research on vaccine-injury and vaccine-effectiveness.  The website raises an important question: To what extent has an increase in vaccine-injuries changed the risks versus benefits of the USA vaccination program for young children?  The SmartVax website provides a Weigh The Risks analysis of the current vaccine risks versus benefits for American children which indicates that vaccine-injury risk (1 in 13 children) is currently higher than the injury risk of each disease.  The vaccine-injury risk was quantifiable for vaccine-induced asthma.  Since there were insufficient studies available to calculate other risks, this section provides discussions on the plausibility of vaccine-induced autism, vaccine-induced allergies, vaccine-induced ADHD, and vaccine-induced deaths.  The disease risk was calculated as the incremental risk to an individual child if that child is not vaccinated during ages 0 – 4 in two cases: 1) in a highly vaccinated population and 2) in a population with low vaccination rates:

The point of this analysis is not to argue against vaccination programs, since vaccines can provide valuable protection against disease injuries and deaths, but rather to dispel the unproven assumption that all existing vaccines’ benefits exceed risks in the USA today and to issue an urgent call to scientists for research to dramatically reduce vaccine-injuries. The SmartVax philosophy proposes that knowledge gained by understanding the mechanism of vaccine-injuries will lead to a smarter vaccination program that produces the best overall public health results.

On May 4th 2011 a new study by Neil Z Miller and Gary S Goldman was published online by SAGE, entitled Infant mortality rates regressed against number of vaccine doses routinely given: Is there a biochemical or synergistic toxicity? This study, is another in a long line of studies revealing evidence showing the more vaccines a baby receives the more chance they have of dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Miller and Goldman look for a possible correlation between vaccines and Infant Mortality Rates.(IMR). Looking at 34 countries, they research the number of infants dying of SIDS per 1000 babies and the number of doses of vaccine that each country is giving to babies under 1yr. Miller and Goldman then look for a correlation between the number of deaths and the number of doses of vaccines given. The hypothesis they were looking to prove was that the greater the number of vaccine doses given to infants before the age of 1yr, the higher the IMR would be. Their hypothesis was proven conclusively as the countries giving fewer doses of vaccines were the countries with the lowest Infant Mortality Rate.

The authors grouped the countries by vaccine dosage. 12–14, 15–17, 18–20, 21–23, and 24–26. When studied, the group in the 12 – 14 dose range, Sweden, Japan, Iceland, Norway, Denmark and Finland were the countries which had the lowest IMR per 1000 live births.

Sweden had a total of 12 vaccine doses given and showed a 2.75 IMR compared with the USA who had a total of 26 vaccine doses given and an IMR of 6.22. The USA came out as having the highest IMR rate as well as the highest number of vaccine doses. Miller and Goldman wrote:

“In 2009, there were approximately 4.5 million live births and 28,000 infant deaths in the United States, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 6.22/1000″.

Vaccine doses do not indicate the number of vaccines given but the total vaccine doses overall, as many vaccines include more than 1 vaccine dose e.g. DPaT is a 3 dose vaccine.

Of course as with all studies variables existed and these were discussed and taken into consideration.

This is not the first study showing similar results. Professionals have been noticing a correlation between vaccines and SIDS for many years. The authors mention many of these in their excellent paper.

A study not mentioned in Miller and Goldman´s paper was the Cotwatch Study written by Dr Viera Scheibner. I feel that this study is one of the most important studies ever produced. The reason for this is because Dr Viera Scheibner was not looking for any correlation between vaccines and SIDS at the time.

In 1985-1986 Dr Scheibner and her late husband Leif Karlsson (a Swedish electronics engineer specializing in patient monitoring systems) developed a pioneering true breathing monitor which they called Cotwatch, A ´true breathing monitor´ is different from standard breathing monitors because it´s electronics separates the babies heart beat and breathing and only the breathing delays the alarm. This is unlike other monitors which take any movement as breathing. On studying the results Scheibner and Karlsson found that the charts produced by their monitor revealed that whenever the babies had had a vaccination flareups of stress induced breathing patterns occurred. The patterns seemed to appear on specific times and days following the vaccination which they named ‘critical hours and days’.

The hepatitis B vaccine has been approved for all U.S. infants at birth, but is it really safe? For a “preventative” vaccination, the amount of complications associated with the hepatitis B vaccination are quite shocking. In fact, a number of peer-reviewed studies have found a relationship between the hep B vaccination and infant deaths both in the U.S. and Europe. With links to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), multiple sclerosis, and numerous chronic autoimmune disorders, some doctors are speaking out against the dangers of the hep B vaccine.

The debate over the dangers of the hepatitis B vaccine may in fact be over, according to a court case reported on by Child Health Safety. In a case in which the court ruled in favor of the plaintiff, who had developed systemic lupus erythematosus as a result of receiving the hep B vaccine, the U.S. government was forced to admit that the vaccine led to the development of the disease. While the plaintiff was deceased at the time the decision was made, it was a landmark case in the fight to uncover the truth regarding the hepatitis B injection. The United States Court of Federal Claims document explains:

“Tambra Harris … filed a petition for compensation alleging that she suffered certain injuries as a result of receiving a vaccination. Among the injuries petitioner alleged that she had suffered as a result of receiving a hepatitis B vaccination was systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) … A lump sum of $475,000.00 in the form of a check payable to petitioner as Administratrix of the Estate of Tambra Harris.”

Dr. Jane Orient of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) testified to Congress regarding the severe health dangers associated with the hepatitis B inoculation, stating: “For most children, the risk of a serious vaccine reaction may be 100 times greater than the risk of hepatitis B.”

It is a case that haunts Dr Waney Squier and one any parent will find deeply distressing.

Eleven years ago, Lorraine Harris stood trial at Nottingham Crown Court charged with manslaughter. Although described as a woman of good character and a careful and caring mother, she was accused of shaking her four-month-old baby Patrick to death two years earlier.

Neuropathologist Dr Squier wrote a report for the prosecution saying that the child was the victim of shaken baby syndrome (SBS).

Lorraine, who vehemently protested her innocence, was convicted and jailed for three years.

Her punishment was not limited to incarceration, as tragic consequences rippled out from Patrick’s death. Lorraine wasn’t allowed to go to his funeral; a baby she gave birth to as she was starting her sentence was taken away for adoption; her partner left her and both her parents died while she was in prison. Her life fell apart.

By the time Lorraine’s appeal was heard in 2005, Dr Squier had become convinced the criteria she had used to define whether SBS had taken place were wrong. In a complete U-turn, she now appeared as an expert witness for the defence. Lorraine’s conviction was quashed.

It is difficult to imagine Lorraine’s feelings as she digested this news. Relief, perhaps, but the occasion could hardly be described as joyous. One of her children had died and she had not been allowed to grieve. Another child had been taken from her. And she would possibly never be free from the taint of the original conviction.

Dr. Ricki D. Robinson, M.D. honored World Autism Awareness Day with a thoughtful blog that superbly navigates between this steadily rising health concern and a medical model that has been challenged to find either an explanation or a treatment approach.

Our health scientific research model studies one substance at a time, yet people are exposed to and retain many chemicals and other kinds of toxins. An assessment of umbilical cord blood showed that even newborns have accumulated over 150 chemical toxins in utero.

Over our lifetimes, we receive multiple exposures of all types, from toxins and synthetic chemical ingredients in foods, agriculture, medicines, and personal care products, to industrial contaminants in air, water, earth and food.

The President’s Cancer Panel Report (PCPR) of 2010 indicated that this buildup is a prime contributor to cancer. Both the National Academy of Sciences, and the PCPR identify research into the cumulative impacts of toxic exposures as a missing link in addressing serious health issues, like autism and cancer.

A report on medical research found that, “The pharmaceutical industry, now the largest sponsor, focuses on developing and testing new products.” But this pharmaceutically based treatment and research model rarely studies how all of the tiny exposures add up. Instead this scientific method persists in looking at one ingredient at a time. Though necessary, this research process is agonizingly slow for the children born every day, who are at risk for autism.

In a study, chemicals can be isolated, but in the human body they interact. Therefore this research method inevitably produces partial findings because it can’t assess synergies, healthy or not. Moreover, since people respond differently even to a single substance, it’s no surprise that complex treatments with multiple ingredients can harm some. Yet our vaccination guidelines fail to allow modifications for these individual differences.

Even when a specific ingredient is known as problematic, that knowledge may not translate into current medical practice. For example, Merck, the producer of the MMR vaccine notes in its literature that those sensitive to eggs may experience a negative reaction to the MMR vaccine. But neither doctors nor parents always know whether or not newborns, or babies have egg allergies, prior to vaccinating them.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants to study autism as a possible clinical outcome of immunization, as part of its newly adopted 5-year research agenda for vaccine safety, the agency said on its website.

The CDC will also study mitochondrial dysfunction and the potential risk for post-vaccine “neurological deterioration,” and convene an expert panel on the feasibility of studying health outcomes such as autism among vaccinated and unvaccinated children.

The CDC plan adopts recommendations approved by the National Vaccine Advisory Committee of the US Department of Health and Human Services. It also comes one month after the federal government’s leading autism body, the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC), signaled a shift in research priorities toward environmental triggers for autism, which the IACC said could include toxins, biological agents and “adverse events following immunization.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Immunization Safety Office Scientific Agenda indentified the need to research “Neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD)” as a possible clinical outcome of vaccination.

The plan also seeks to deternine if the mercury-based preservative thimerosal is associated with increased risk for “clinically important tics or Tourette syndrome.” The CDC cited one study (Thompson, NEJM, 2007), which “found that increasing exposure to mercury from birth to age 7 months was associated with motor and phonic tics in boys,” and added that “an association between exposure to thimerosal and tics was found in two earlier studies (Andrews, Pediatrics, 2004; Verstraeten, Pediatrics, 2003).”

And, noting that the IACC federal autism panel “suggested several studies including vaccinated versus unvaccinated children to determine if there are differences in health outcomes,” the CDC said it will convene an “external expert committee to offer guidance on the feasibility of conducting such studies and additional studies related to the immunization schedule, including studies that may indicate if multiple vaccinations increase risk for immune system disorders.”

Meanwhile, the IACC has signaled a shift in research priorities into the causes of autism, moving away from genetic studies in favor of investigating the interaction between genes and environmental factors, which it said could include toxins, biological agents and vaccines.

The IACC, among other things, helps direct millions of federal dollars into autism research. Until now, the IACC’s updated strategic plan noted, “the majority of this funding (was) directed toward the identification of genetic risk factors (with) less funding and attention toward environmental research.”

A number of environmental factors are now being researched, the IACC said, adding that, “Recent studies suggest that factors such as parental age and exposure to infections, toxins, and other biological agents may confer environmental risk. These findings require further investigation.”

‘Do no harm! That’, said Dr David Freed, introducing the British Society of Environmental Medicine’s excellent conference which he had also organised, ‘is the charge put upon doctors when they qualify. But do they?’

The assumption is that the more medical care is available, the more good it will do but the facts do not always bear this out.  On two rare occasions when doctors actually went on strike (one in Canada in the 1950s and one more recently in Israel) their patients seem to have got better but, before any attempt is made to ban all doctors, association does not necessarily indicate causation.

The concept of disease prevention is relatively modern and dates from the invention of the small pox vaccine. Earlier generations of doctors saw their role as one of curing illness not preventing it – what right had they to interfere with perfectly healthy people?

However, smallpox was such a horrendous disease that the possibility that you could prevent someone catching it by injecting them with small quantity of infected serum, even if this carried significant risks (which it did – three to four deaths and around 1,000 cases of serious illness per 100,000 vaccinations) seemed worth pursuing.

Routine vaccinations – the science – Dr Jayne  Donegan.

Dr Donegan trained at St Mary’s  Hospital Medical School and, after a series of specializations, became a GP. When during the 1994 measles/rubella campaign, over seven million school children were vaccinated against measles, some for the third time, she began to question the universal childhood vaccination programme and to study the science behind vaccination.

However, the concept once established, does open the door to almost limitless opportunities for doctors to ’do harm’….

Vaccines, Atopy and Allergy: Problems and Solutions – Dr Richard Halverson

Dr Halverson described how, as a GP working in London and doing a bit of medical writing on the side, he had little specific interest in vaccination until he was asked to write an article on the MMR controversy when it broke in 1998.

His research for the article suggested that there was some evidence, if slightly tenuous, that there could be a problem with the MMR vaccine. However, when he turned to the Department of Health and to other government bodies for evidence that the vaccine did not cause a problem, he found none at all.
Concerned, he started to offer his own patients single vaccines rather than the triple jab….

Public deceit, abuse of power and flawed science; vaccination policy of Joint Committee on Vaccination an Immunisation (JCVI)

Dr Lucija Tomljenovic  of the University of British Columbia has made a study of the JCVI’s  and the Department of Health’s policies and actions over the last 30 years in pursuit of their vaccination programmes. The ‘Curious Case of the Post Vioxx Statin Trials’

Professor Michel de Lorgeril of the Faculté de Medicine de la Merci at the University of Grenoble’s discussion of the ‘Curious Case of the Post Vioxx Statin Trials’ proved as entertaining as it was enlightening.

Professor Lorgeril started by reminding his audience of the known, but often overlooked, fact that pharmaceutical companies make their money through the patents that they hold on their drugs. Once a patent runs out, so do their fees. However, drug patents are now running out fast and it is not easy, or cheap, to discover new drugs. Drug companies are, therefore, forced to make ever more desperate attempts to capitalise on the drugs on which they do still hold patents by exaggerating the benefit that the drug delivers and/or minimising its side effects…

Christina England, adoptive mother of two special needs boys, described the horrifying misdiagnoses of Munchausen’s Syndrome by proxy (a condition in which a parent is deemed to invent the illness of a child in order to draw attention or sympathy to themselves) which had been made in her own case and in those of many other parents whose children suffered from multiple allergies, autistic spectrum disorders, vaccine damage and what was thought to be shaken baby syndrome. Although, after years of struggle, she kept custody of her own children, in many cases the individual child, and sometimes all the children in the family have been taken into care, destroying a family already torn apart by the child’s illness of disabilities….

Global concerns about HPV Vaccinations

The HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine is claimed to protect teenagers (girls from cervical cancer, boys from genital warts) but a rising tide of adverse reactions are now causing serious concern.

In August 2010 www.sanevax.org was launched as a clearing house for the alarming amount of research data which is flagging up major problems with the two main HPV vaccines, Gardasil (manufactured by Merck) and Cervarix (manufactured by Glaxo, Smith Kline).

Freda Birrell, of Sanevax Scotland, and Leslie Carol Botha of Sanevax USA presented some of this data on the ‘Adverse Vaccine Events  which have been reported in the US and which are thought to represent less than 10% of the actual incidence, since there is so little awareness among both the public and physicians of the  adverse effects that the vaccines can have and the availability of a reporting system for adverse events….

Mitochondrial dysfunction in pill mothers and Autisic Spectrum Disorders

Dr Ellen Grant, a founder member of the BSEM and a long time campaigner against the contraceptive pill gave an impassioned talk linking the use of the contraceptive pill and the resulting progesterone dominance and endocrine disruption to the massive rise in autism and related conditions – up between 1987 and 1998, in California, by 300% in comparison to rises of around 3% in cerebral palsy, epilepsy and mental retardation during the same period. Today an estimated 21% of children. just over one in five, need ‘special needs treatment’ while one in 64 has autistic spectrum disorders…

Dr Andrew Wakefield

Dr Andrew Wakefield, whose recently published book Callous Disregard, Autism and Vaccines – the truth behind a tragedy, tells the story of his research at the Royal Free into the inflammatory bowel  conditions of autistic children and his subsequent vilification by the UK medical establishment and by the UK government, gave a brief overview of the autism/vaccine link from the late 1980s to the present day.

The Vaccine Machine

Yesterday the Supreme Court handed down a long awaited decision addressing the issue of whether or not parents could go outside the government’s “vaccine court” to sue drug makers for vaccine injuries.

The decision, called “a victory for vaccine makers such as Wyeth and GlaxoSmithKline”, is a defeat for the many parents who placed their trust in the nation’s vaccine program.

The Washington Post reported that dissenting Justices Sotomayor and Ginsburg expressed concern that confining parents to vaccine court would lessen the incentives for vaccine manufacturers to monitor and improve the vaccines they produce.

The Post article then turned it’s focus to the prevailing side, stating:

The majority said that Congress found such a system necessary to ensure that vaccines remain readily available…

Using that rational we could excuse exploding gas tanks because of the need to keep American car manufactures in business and American workers employed.

The judges in the majority expressed their feeling that:

…federal regulators are in the best position to decide whether vaccines are safe and properly designed.

Which could have just as easily been worded:

Those whose mission it is to ensure that as many men, women and children are vaccinated with as many, and as much vaccine as can possibly be absorbed, are in the best position to decide whether vaccines are safe and properly designed.

Justice Antonin Scalia, reflecting the judges’ blind faith in “science” wrote:

Justice Scalia failed to mention how juries can be relied on to decide criminal cases involving forensic evidence (a field that incorporates a number of scientific principles) but that’s another issue altogether.
