VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Creative vaccine distribution strategies, improved vaccine technologies and more rapid manufacturing timetables were among ideas speakers at the 2010 Pediatric Academic Societies proposed during a symposium on vaccine-preventable diseases in the developing world.

Kathleen M. Neuzil, MD, MPH, professor of medicine at the University of Washington, senior advisor for immunizations at PATH, both in Seattle, and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices member said that the lessons learned during this past season’s influenza A (H1N1) pandemic can be applied to distributing vaccines to people in low-resource settings.

“The virus was detected and characterized in record time, manufacturing capacity was at all time high and there were rapid organization and distribution efforts,” Neuzil said. “But we didn’t have enough vaccine, we didn’t get it out soon enough and distribution was not equitable.”

She noted that although H1N1 peaked during the third week of October in 2009, many physicians offices did not get the vaccine until much later, and many developing countries are just now getting their first allotment of H1N1 vaccine.

As director of PATH’s Influenza Vaccine Project, Neuzil and colleagues are exploring live-attenuated, recombinant and adjuvant vaccine approaches, as well as more broadly reactive antigens that offer more cross-protection, with longer-lasting immunity than the typical one or two years.

“Most of these are still in very early development,” Neuzil said.

Although the United States and Canada now have universal influenza vaccine recommendations, Neuzil acknowledged that this is a difficult goal to achieve, and highly unpractical for many countries.

Taking a high risk approach may be a more logistically sound strategy. Data from a randomized controlled trial that involved 340 pregnant Bangladesh women who received influenza vaccine, revealed that babies whose mothers received vaccine experienced a 28% reduction in illness compared with the control group.

Furthermore, influenza specific antibodies were higher among vaccinated mothers and infants, and infant geometric mean titers sampled at birth from cord blood were comparable to levels measured in the mother’s serum, according to Neuz.

No-fault compensation program overdue, experts say

Canada and Russia are the only G8 nations without national no-fault compensations programs for people injured from vaccines, and according to Canadian vaccine experts, it is high time Canada make its exit from that short but inglorious list.

Canada needs a federal no-fault vaccine-injury compensation program to protect the unfortunate few who suffer adverse reactions to vaccines, according to a new report, Designing a No-Fault Vaccine-Injury Compensation Programme for Canada: Lessons Learned from an International Analysis of Programmes, from the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs (http://webapp.mcis.utoronto.ca/resources/munkpapers/keelan_workingpaper_feb2011.pdf).

When such instances occur now (outside of Quebec, the only province with a no-fault program), injured parties must seek compensation — for lost wages, uninsured medical expenses and rehabilitation services — through legal action. The problem is, they always lose, because vaccine manufactures and health care providers can’t be held at fault if they follow best practices.

“If people have an unfortunate reaction to the vaccine, causing permanent or serious injury, they shouldn’t have to rely on civil litigation to get compensation,” says lead author Jennifer Keelan, assistant professor at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health in Ontario. “These injuries will occur despite best practices, and you can’t predict the rare people who will have these adverse events.”

Not only would a no-fault program benefit individuals who suffer harm, it could help the public in general, says Keelan. The transmission of pathogens in communities drops significantly when vaccinations rates hit a certain threshold. This is known as herd immunity. People waffling about whether to get a vaccine would be more likely to get immunized, says Keelan, if they knew an adverse reaction wouldn’t cost them financially.

People’s bank accounts shouldn’t suffer, she says, if they make decisions that contribute to public health. “Ethically, it’s unacceptable. Many people don’t get vaccinated just for themselves; they do it for the good of the community” says Keelan. “Support for immunization is broad in Canada but it is very shallow. It doesn’t take very much to unnerve parents who will then choose not to expose their children to vaccines.”

Several months ago, I interviewed British doctor Richard Halvorsen concerning the heated vaccine-autism controversy.  Dr. Halvorsen had gained a fair amount of attention in the British press. I contacted him recently to get his views on the allegations of fraud against Dr. Andrew Wakefield. He minced no words.

“The latest allegations against Dr Andrew Wakefield are quite extraordinary. It seems that certain factions of the medical establishment are intent on hounding him to the grave.

The accusations of journalist Brian Deer make no sense at all. They appear to centre around the fact that elements of the hospital medical records, as reported in the Lancet 1998 paper, are at odds with other aspects of the children’s medical records, mainly those of the children’s General Practitioners (GPs). This is hardly surprising as the hospital doctors who recorded the children’s medical history (which was not, in any case, done by Dr Wakefield) would not have had access to the GPs’ medical notes. Medical histories, taken at different times by different healthcare professionals will inevitably have some inconsistencies.

What is so disturbing is that the editor of the BMJ, who should have known better, appears to have fallen for Deer’s spurious arguments hook, line and sinker.

We have to take a step back and wonder what is really going on here. To go to such extreme – and desperate lengths – to annihilate Dr Wakefield (the person, note, not the science) some people must be very afraid. Afraid, presumably, that parents might actually believe something that is blatantly obvious: that is that all vaccines can cause serious adverse reactions, including autism. By denying what is not only obvious but also supported by a wealth of scientific evidence these obsessive vaccine protagonists risk losing the trust of all parents and destroying the whole vaccine programme, the very thing that they are trying to prevent happening.”

Dr. Halvorsen has been telling the truth, fearlessly, for quite some time.

In October, 2009, the Telegraph in the UK ran the story, “I’m not opposed to jabs but there are serious worries” by Dr. Halvorsen. (HERE) He talked about the pressure put on parents not to question vaccines and the harsh tactics employed by the government.  Furthermore, he said, “This climate of fear is ruthlessly exploited by the big pharmaceutical companies, which see vast profits in exaggerated health concerns.”

Halvorsen cited the sudden death of a young schoolgirl after receiving the cervical cancer vaccine as an example of a vaccine program gone wrong.  While he said he’s not opposed to vaccinations, he does believe that vaccine efficacy claims are overdone and side effects are not being recognized.  He referred to the plan to mass vaccinate for the swine flu as “madness.”

“As a doctor, I have been concerned for some time about this issue. I should stress that I am not in any way opposed to vaccinations.

“Indeed I run an immunisation clinic which offers a wide range of vaccines as a protection against various diseases. But I am increasingly disturbed by the lack of any debate either about long-term vaccine safety or about the excessive influence of commercial interests.

“Contrary to what Government officials and pharmaceutical giants pretend, the health of future generations could be compromised if we are not allowed to question this official fixation with mass vaccination.

“In the research for my recent book on this subject, I discovered that not only are inoculations being introduced with less and less research on their safety, but, just as worryingly, they are being promoted for diseases which do not represent a widespread danger to the public.”

Aluminum
Causes neuron death. Aluminum is extraordinarily toxic when found with mercury. It plays a role in neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Autism, Parkinson’s, seizures, comas, others), blood disease, bone disease, and other serious conditions. Aluminum has no known benefit in the human body.

Ammonium Sulfate
Alters protein soluability. Suspected gastrointestinal or liver toxicant, neurotoxicant, respiratory toxicant. Irritates eyes, skin and respiratory system. Not tested for safety when injected. Likely to elevate level of ammonia when metabolized.

Animal Cells
Calf fetus, chick embryo, chick kidney, chicken egg, cow heart, dog kidney, duck egg, guinea pig embryo, horse blood, monkey kidney, monkey lung, mouse blood, pig blood, rabbit brain, sheep blood and others. These are used in various vaccine production lines. Residues are not completely purified out of the final packaged product. Contamination can introduce new pathogens.

Antibiotics
Allergic reactions can range from mild to life threatening (anaphylaxis). Depletes glutathione. Can affect RNA and DNA activity. Side effects can include damage to kidneys and hearing loss. Listed antibiotics include Chlortetracycline, Dihydrostreptomycin, Gentamicin, Neomycin, Polymyxin B, and Streptomycin. Chlortetracycline appears to be excitotoxic (it fluoresces depending upon Ca2+ level — see discussions and widespread use of the phenomena).

Antifungal (Amphotericin B)
Immediate allergic reactions can include fever, shaking, chills, hypotension, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, headache, dyspnea, and tachypnea. Serious skin reaction at site of injection may occur. Damage to liver, kidney, and heart can also occur.

Benzethonium Chloride
Cytotoxic, neurotoxic, excitotoxic, and synergistically toxic. Suspected endocrine toxicant.

Beta-Propiolactone
Carcinogenic. Also a suspected gastrointestinal, liver, respiratory, skin and sense organ toxicant.

Detergents
Cytotoxic; detergents cause cells to leak or explode by weakening their walls. This catastrophically mimics the membrane attack complex (MAC) — please read here to understand why this overlooked event can be particularly harmful.

It has been suggested that the H1N1 Flu vaccine causes miscarriages (see, for example, here, here, and here). This month, I want to see if the claim is supported by VAERS data.

How do we determine whether a VAERS event resulted in a miscarriage? VAERS uses the MedDRA symptom classification, which organizes all known symptoms at five levels of detail. At the second level of detail is an entry “Abortions and stillbirth” which has under it “Abortion related conditions and complications”, “Abortions spontaneous”, “Stillbirth and foetal death” and “Abortions not specified as induced or spontaneous”. Each of these is further refined into specific symptoms. So it seems that this second-level term (or as it is known in MedDRA, the High-Level Group Term or HLGT) is a valid way to identify miscarriages.

Now let’s search all of the VAERS events (going back to 1990) for this symptom and make a graph of the vaccines listed in those events. To do this, check Expert Mode (to enable MedDRA searches), click Show Graph and graph Vaccines (in Section 1), and select the MedDRA level HLGT under the symptom list and then select Abortions and stillbirth (in Section 2).

This graph will surely favor vaccines that have been given for 21 years over those that have been recently introduced, because such vaccines will have been given much more, and so will have produced many more symptoms. In other words, this graph should de-emphasize the H1N1 Flu vaccine, which has existed for just one year. We should see relatively few H1N1-related miscarriage events compared with the “Seasonal” Flu vaccine which has been administered to many more patients.

The results are shocking. First of all, the H1N1 Flu vaccine has appeared in miscarriage events more often than almost any other vaccine. Of the 1115 VAERS events that mention the abortion/stillbirth symptom, 203 are cases where the H1N1 Flu vaccine was given (200 with the FLU(H1N1) vaccine code and 3 with the FLUN(H1N1) vaccine code). This ignores the current Flu vaccine being given which has the H1N1 strain in it (the FLU(10-11) vaccine code). By contrast, there are only 63 abortion/stillbirth events associated with the Seasonal Flu Vaccine (vaccine codes FLU and FLUN) and this vaccine has been administered to millions of people over 21 years of data collection!

If you consider that the H1N1 Flu vaccine has been associated with 3 times as many abortion/stillbirth events, and that it has been given for just 5 percent of the time that Seasonal Flu vaccines have been given, then it appears that the H1N1 Flu vaccine is 60 times more likely to cause a miscarriage than the Seasonal Flu vaccine.

But the graph has more shocking results for us. The H1N1 Flu vaccine appears in many of the abortion/stillbirth cases, but not the most. The “winner,” appearing in 297 of the VAERS records associated with miscarriage, is Gardasil (vaccine code HPV4)! Once again, this vaccine is a newcomer, having only existed for 4 years.

So pregnant women should read the product manufacturer’s insert for the vaccine they are considering and speak with one or more trusted health care professionals before making a decision about vaccination during pregnancy.
