Scientists across the country are finding oral sex causes throat cancer — passing tobacco as the leading cause in the United States. The reason behind this concern for oral sex is the potential infections behind the human papillomavirus (HPV).

The One More Girl project / Why would two young men make a documentary about women’s health? For brothers Ryan and David Richardson, who live in Honolulu, the personal became the political. A year-and-a-half ago, the Richardsons’ teenage sister, Donielle, was administered a shot of Gardasil, one of the human papilloma virus vaccines on the market that aim to protect women 26 years old and younger against cervical cancer through a series of three shots. What happened immediately following that first shot was frightening. Donielle’s eyes rolled to the back of her head. She started convulsing. Donielle had a seizure. While her recovery was arduous for the Richardson family, Donielle is now healthy.

Human papillomavirus lingers for months in men, study shows

The virus notorious for causing cervical cancer in women also turns up frequently in men and can hang on unnoticed for months or even years, researchers report online March 1 in Lancet. The study solidifies earlier research indicating that human papillomavirus is highly prevalent in men and strengthens the case for vaccinating men and boys against it, the report’s authors say.

A QUARTER of young girls are forsaking a life-saving cervical cancer vaccine because of ignorance.

Two studies suggested an alarming lack of knowledge was to blame for many girls aged 12-13 not taking up the vaccine, Cancer Council spokeswoman Kate Broun said.

The Gardasil jab, which protects against two strains of the human papillomavirus, which cause 70 per cent of cervical cancers, is provided free to schoolgirls under a Federal Government program.

Sexual health doctors have urged the Government to vaccinate against genital warts as part of the school-based jabs programme.

Cases of the sexually transmitted infection (STI) have soared, with an increase of 33 per cent across the South East since 2000.

More than 400 new cases per 100,000 of the population were diagnosed in Kent in 2009.

Medway had the highest rate of the infection at 167 in 2009. Recent figures from Medway’s GUM (genitor-urinary medicine) clinic show cases of genital warts rose 36 per cent from 302 to 412 between 2004 and 2010.
