The women’s branch of the AKP has prepared a report that highlights obstacles faced by women seeking employment in Turkey. Gender equality is out of balance because women are paid less than men and there are fears of sexual harassment, transportation problems, loopholes in insurance plans and discrimination by male employees, according to the report.
Turkey
Turkey needs a grand vision to give women equal status in its workforce is the emphasis of a report on women in the workplace.
Wide-scale vision and understanding is necessary to enable women to manage the multiple problems they face in trying to match men in the workforce, according to a report from the ruling party’s women’s branch.
Society’s existing mindset, coupled with a lack of regulations, has created an uneven playing field for women, the report said, adding that the results point to a striking level of inequality between the genders in the Turkish work force.
“Women and men are playing in the same league in terms of employment,” said the report, titled “The obstacles for increasing women’s employment and concrete suggestions for solutions.”
“This is due to macroeconomic policies and the frames of mind that rationalize those policies, as it is with everything else.”
The Justice and Development Party, or AKP’s, Women’s Branch prepared the report.
Psychological barrier
The study also argued there is a “psychological barrier” hindering women’s employment that has been produced by the structuring of the country’s workforce. Given the country’s chronic unemployment, these barriers mean men are preferred for the few available job opportunities. “The primary reason is that men are still perceived as the head of and provider for households,” according to the report.
