My radio interview with Lara Owen is now posted. Lara is one of the wisest and most intuitive women I have ever interviewed. Although we have never met – and although we reside on two different parts of the world – we have intuited and channeled and the same interpretation of the sacredness of the menstrual cycle. Please listen to this extraordinary woman share her wisdom.
‘Her Blood is Gold: Awakening to the Wisdom of Menstruation’ is a classic in the literature of women’s health and spirituality. Join Leslie Carol Botha on Monday April 15 when she interviews author Lara Owen as she “illuminates the role the menstrual cycle can play in developing and sustaining female strength, self-healing, and self-knowledge.” Holy Hormones Honey! audio streamed only on KRFC FM Fort Collins 6 to 7 pm MST.
Lara Owen’s first book, Her Blood Is Gold: Awakening to the Wisdom of Menstruation, was published in 1993 and is considered to be a classic in the literature of women’s health and spirituality. Drawing from ancient indigenous wisdom along with the experience of her own retreats over several years, the book illuminates the role the menstrual cycle can play in developing and sustaining female strength, self-healing, and self-knowledge.
Her most recent book, Growing Your Inner Light: A Guide to Independent Spiritual Practice explores the practicalities of the independent path, psychological issues of self-designed spirituality, and time-honoured techniques found cross-culturally that help us develop our innate wisdom, compassion, social responsibility and natural sense of the divine. Her other books include Love Begins at 40: A Guide to Starting Over, about midlife relationships, and Dreaming of the Nile and The French Cure, two novels about women’s quest for meaning and wholeness.
Reviews of Her Blood Is Gold
“Like the wise-women whose memory she celebrates, Lara Owen is both scientist and poet. In this wonderful book, she shows how “the curse”, when ritually respected and restored to its ancient position, becomes every woman’s crock of gold.” Chris Knight Ph.D., author of Blood Relations: Menstruation and the Origins of Culture (Yale Univ. Press), Professor of Anthropology, University of E. London.
“Her Blood Is Gold is a graceful and empowering book on menstruation, filled with insights that are equally valuable to both men and women. This book should be included in the curriculum of every school on this planet.” Christiane Northrup M.D., author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom (Bantam).
“Lara Owen presents a viewpoint on menstruation which is startling in its reversal of conventional attitudes. Her presentation is so lucid and convincing that after reading it one wonders how one could ever have regarded menstruation as a problem. This book is a must for any woman seeking wholeness. This is the rare kind of book that creates culture rather than merely commenting upon it. Lara Owen has sketched the outlines of a new social norm.” Steven Bratman M.D., author of The Alternative Medicine Sourcebook (Lowell House)
