Skipping period is often considered as a hallmark of early pregnancy. But contrary to popular belief, it is very much possible that you have missed period but not pregnant. This often makes a woman panic, as it can indicate some major problems with the reproductive system. However, this is not always the case, as missed periods can also be related to some factors that are not associated with any alarming medical condition. It is often observed that a woman is more likely to experience irregularities in her menstrual cycle in the first few years after the onset of menstruation, till her body’s hormonal balance is established.

The medical term used for the absence of menstruation is amenorrhea. Amenorrhea can be of two types, primary and secondary. Primary amenorrhea is the condition where menstruation does not occur in women till the age of 16 years. On the other hand, secondary amenorrhea is characterized by the absence of menstrual periods for more than 6 months in a woman, who previously used to have regular periods. Secondary amenorrhea or missed periods can be caused by several factors that can interfere with the hormonal balance of the body.
