On Sunday 17th October 2010 one of the UK’s leading Sunday newspapers, the Mail on Sunday, reported that a recently released report suggests that the UK government’s position has changed regarding the H1N1 vaccine and related cases of Guillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS). This came to the attention of the Mail on Sunday after the Medicines and Health Care products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) released it’s latest report.

The article, Experts admit the swine flu jab ‘may cause’ deadly nerve disease, (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health…) by Jo MacFarlane states that the MHRA report says the following:

“Given the uncertainties in the available information and as with seasonal flu vaccines, a slightly elevated risk of GBS following H1N1 vaccines cannot be ruled out. Epidemiological are ongoing to further assess this possible association.”

This is a complete turn around by the British Government as previously they have emphasized that there was no link between the H1N1 vaccine and cases of GBS.

Jo MacFarlane Mail on Sunday says:

“Government experts say there is no evidence of an increase in risk similar to 1976, but the MHRA report reveals they are calculating if there might be a smaller raised risk.”

The MHRA had 15 suspected GBS cases after vaccination – and six million doses of the swine flu jab Pandemrix were given. It is not known if swine flu or the vaccine could have caused the suspected cases.”

Last year after the Mail on Sunday revealed that doctors were being asked to monitor cases of GBS in swine flu pandemic. A letter released from the Health Protection Agency’s Justin McCracken shortly afterward stated that there was no evidence to suggest that there was an increased risk of GBS from the vaccines being developed to fight the then current pandemic.

So what has changed?

In 1976 GBS was clearly linked to the swine flu vaccine. In fact the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu…) clearly state on their website:

‘GBS may have several causes .While it is not fully known what causes GBS, it is known that about two-thirds of people who get GBS do so several days or weeks after they have been sick with diarrhea or a lung or sinus illness. An infection with the bacteria Campylobacter jejuni, which can cause diarrhea, is one of the most common illnesses linked to GBS. Although rare, people can also get GBS after having the flu or other infections such as Epstein Barr virus. Except for the swine flu vaccine used in 1976, no other flu vaccines have been clearly linked to GBS.

A new report by the National Coalition of Organized Women (NCOW), states, that as many as 3,587 cases, may of either miscarried or had a stillbirth after receiving the H1N1 vaccine.

In an exceptionally strong and well executed report, written on the Child Health Safety Website entitled ‘Flu Vaccine Caused 3,587 US Miscarriages from H1N1 Vaccine,’ they say :-

“The corrected estimate for the total number of 2009-A-H1N1-flu-shot-associated miscarriages and stillbirths during the 2009/10-flu season is 1,588 (95% goodness-of-fit confidence interval, 946 to 3587). That is, the lower and upper range-probability of miscarriage and stillbirths due to the H1N1 vaccine was as low as 946 and as high as 3,587.

Eileen Dannemann, Director of NCOW, presented the findings for the second time to Dr. Marie McCormick, chair of the Vaccine Risk and Assessment Working Group, during the Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines (ACCV) meeting, Sept 3, 2010. Just prior to Ms. Dannemann´s presentation Dr. McCormick, had pronounced that there were absolutely no H1N1 vaccine-related adverse events in pregnant women in 2009/10, directly contradicting the evidence publicly available.”

Despite these alarmingly high figures being made public, which have been fully backed up with reports taken from the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS), the Government still strongly recommends that this potentially dangerous vaccine, reported to have killed thousands of developing fetuses, to pregnant women of the USA.

On 22nd September 2010 Reuters had this to say :-

“NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Despite landing in the hospital more often if they catch the flu, no more than a quarter of pregnant women in the U.S. get vaccinated against it.

That’s according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which has issued a recommendation urging all pregnant women to get the flu shot.

While the recommendation itself isn’t new, the statement, published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, adds evidence on the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, said Dr. William M. Callaghan of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

He said the CDC and several medical associations back the statement, which notes that the shot not only protects the woman, but also her baby.

Flu vaccines aren’t approved by the Food and Drug Administration for infants younger than six months of age, but babies can get the protective antibodies naturally through breast milk if their mother got the vaccine.”

Note the sentence “Flu vaccines aren’t approved by the Food and Drug Administration for infants younger than six months of age” By recommending this vaccine to pregnant women this is exactly what the FDA, are doing, they are actively promoting a vaccine for use in babies of less than 6 months old.

The Bloomberg Business week agrees with the Governments recommendations saying:-

“Based on expert medical opinion, we urge all pregnant women, and women who expect to become pregnant, to get their influenza immunization because the flu poses a serious risk of illness and death during pregnancy,” Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes, said in a news release from the organization.

Italian researchers have discovered that the influenza vaccine does NOT reduce risk of severe complications from influenza viral infections that result in hospital death, influenza or pneumonia admission among the elderly population.

The finding came after Manzoli L. and colleagues from the University G. d’Annunzio of Chieti in Italy examined data from 32,457 elderly people, of whom 66.2 percent received the influenza vaccine.

According to a recent review, almost all flu vaccine trials, with the exception of one out of 49 of said trials, have not compared the incidence of flu in the vaccinated population with that in those unvaccinated.

Rather, subjects who received flu shots in influenza vaccine trials were only tested for antigens which were produced in response to flu vaccine. When a flu vaccine generated certain levels of antigens as defined by researchers, the vaccine maker claimed that the flu vaccine worked to prevent flu.

The authors of the current study said this result is similar in Italy, where the influenza vaccine is routinely administered to the elderly population, but the impact on the relieving of the illness burden has been rarely evaluated because the cost for a conventional cohort study would be too cost ineffective to conduct.

The researchers obtained in Oct 2006 patient information on their immunization status and main outcomes, such as hospitalizations for influenza, and/or pneumonia, through General Practitioners who documented patient information.

They found that the hospitalization rate was low in the sample population; only 7 elderly patients were admitted for influenza and 135 for pneumonia.

But using either bivariate or multivariate analysis, the researchers found that vaccination did not significantly reduce the risk of in-hospital death, influenza or pneumonia admission.

The study was published in the June 2009 issue of Journal of Preventive Medicine and Hygiene.

Elderly people, young children and people with compromised immune systems such as those who have become infected with HIV or those who have received cancer treatments are believed to be at higher risk of viral infections, such as influenza.

The Swedish Medical Products Agency has received reports from health care professionals regarding narcolepsy as suspected adverse drug reaction following Pandemrix flu vaccination.

The reports concern teenaged children who developed narcolepsy symptoms one to two months after vaccination against the H1N1 pandemic. Finland is also looking into the possible link following an increase in the sleeping disorder among children this spring.

According to The Local:

“In the European Union, around 30 million people were vaccinated using Pandemrix. Sweden bought 18 million doses, which was enough to provide two injections for each person in its 9.3 million population.”

The Pandemrix package insert shows that “somnolence”, although not narcolepsy per se, is a known potential side effect of the drug.

GlaxoSmithKline the drug giants, have spent the last few days trying to stay off the bottom of the FTSE 100, especially after the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said that it’s diabetes treatment Avandia should be pulled from sale, over concerns that it can lead to heart attacks in some patients. This came at a particularly difficult time for GlaxoSmithKline and was yet another nail in their coffin, as Pandemrix, their vaccine for the swine flu, is currently also under the magnifying glass, having been suspended by Finland, Sweden, Poland and Nepal, due to a growing number of reports of adverse reactions.

Last night the UK documentary series Panorama, revealed that despite warnings that the drug Avandia should be removed from the market, millions of prescriptions for the drug were still being written every day and doctors had been ignoring the advice given, by failing to warn patients about potential safety issues. The safety trials which had been studied by the agencies approving the drug, were shown to be substandard and it was revealed that it was GSK themselves who had carried out the safety trials showing only the ones that boosted favourable results. These revelations appeared to have caused GSK to finally hit the bottom of the FTSE with a massive thud, as shares plummeted 19.5p to 1,249p. This was despite their insistence as usual that both Avandia and Pandemrix were both safe and effective.

I am sure that even GSK would agree with me, that this has definitely been a ‘annus horribilis’

The term ‘annus horribilis’ for those of you who are not familiar, means a horrible year and was derived from the Latin phrase ‘annus mirabilis’ – year of wonders (or miracles). The saying was made popular after Queen Elizabeth II used it to describe 1992 – the year that the marriages of her two sons Charles and Andrew broke down and Windsor Castle caught fire. This year however, it is particularly apt to describe the year the drug giants Glaxo Smith Kline are having.

Last night the UK public were horrified to learn that the popular diabetes drug Avandia used to lower the blood sugar in millions of diabetes sufferers, was actually causing many of them to suffer heart attacks. Panorama’s brilliant journalist Shelly Jofre explained how GSK bends the facts, fixes data and have huge conflicts of interest.

Yesterday’s Daily Mail (who had a privileged early viewing of this excellent documentary), also described the GSK antics. In their article by Jerome Burne Secrecy of drugs watchdogs puts us all in danger Burne wrote-

“it is now clear that the drug regulator in Europe (The European Medicines Agency) which licensed Avandia for the UK ten years ago ,was worried about a heart attack risk even then. But this was never made clear to patients and the trial requested by the agency to test specifically for heart attack safety took nine years to report”

Of course these were not the only two problems that GSK have encountered this year. Not so long ago the Rotarix vaccine was suspended by the USA, Switzerland and Jordan because it was found to contain pig virus. Although cleared of causing potential harm this could now upset some Muslim activist groups as they cannot have vaccines that contain pork substances.

The European Medicines Agency has launched a review of the swine flu vaccine Pandemrix, following reports of a link with the vaccine and the sleep disorder narcolepsy.

The review is to be carried out by the agency at the request of the European Commission following a limited number of cases of narcolepsy following Pandemrix vaccination, reported mainly in Finland and Sweden.

Narcolepsy is a rare sleep disorder that causes a person to fall asleep suddenly and unexpectedly. It is believed to be triggered by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

The Agency stressed that it is at present not known if the vaccine caused the disorder.

Pandemrix has been used for vaccination against H1N1 influenza in at least 30.8 million Europeans and was the most commonnly-used H1N1 vaccine in Ireland. Swine flu killed 24 Irish people in the recent outbreak.

Narcolepsy is a rare sleep disorder that causes a person to fall asleep suddenly and unexpectedly. Its precise cause is unknown, but it is generally considered to be triggered by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including infections.

The Agency says it will look carefully at all of the available data to determine whether there is evidence for a causal association between the swine flu vaccine and narcolepsy.

As part of its evaluation the agency will also consider the “background” rate for narcolepsy; that is, the number of cases that would normally be expected to be diagnosed.

The Agency says it will be working with experts from across the EU to assess this possible safety concern and any impact on the benefit risk balance of Pandemrix. It says it will will consider at its September 2010 meeting the need for any provisional measures pending completion of the evaluation.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael Deputy for Cork South Central Deirdre Clune has called on Health Minister Mary Harney to address those who are worried following media reports of risks associated with the new cervical cancer vaccination.

“Minister Harney needs to reassure parents of the benefits of the HSE HPV cervical cancer vaccine and to outline the research she carried out resulting in her decision to implement the programme. I am concerned about the negative commentary surrounding the HPV vaccination programme”, Deputy Clune said.

This vaccine is to be provided to 12-year-old girls across the country next month.

“The HSE is hoping for an 80% take-up of this vaccine. In an era of multimedia outlets there is a lot of information available, some reliable, some not. Parents of 12- year-old girls need support and reassurance before they agree to have their daughters vaccinated,” Deputy Clune said.

Federal health officials are investigating the first hints of any possible significant complications from the H1N1 vaccine, but stressed that the concerns will probably turn out to be a false alarm.

The latest analysis of data has detected what could be a somewhat elevated rate of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which can cause paralysis and death; Bell’s palsy, a temporary facial paralysis; and thrombocytopenia, which is a low level of blood platelets, officials reported Friday. The data is being collected through five of the networks the government is using to monitor people who were inoculated against the swine flu.

Officials stressed that it is far too early to know whether the vaccine was increasing the risk of those conditions or whether there is some other explanation, such as doctors identifying more cases because of the intensive effort to pinpoint any safety problems with the vaccine.

Based on the preliminary report, the Health and Human Services Department’s National Vaccine Advisory Committee, which has been charged with monitoring the vaccine’s safety, voted unanimously to follow up on the findings. “We’re at the first step of determining whether there is a problem,” Guthrie S. Birkhead, who chairs the committee, said during a teleconference in which a subcommittee of experts presented its latest findings on the data. “There’s a lot more work to determine whether there is.”

Marie McCormick, who led the subcommittee, said there was a good chance the indications of problems could disappear with further analysis. Even if the link with Guillain-Barrésyndrome is confirmed, the committee calculated the vaccine at most could be causing one extra case per 1 million people vaccinated.

“We have categorized this as a potential, not even a weak, signal,” McCormick said, adding that no signs of problems have been seen in the other networks of data the government has been analyzing.

Even if the possible risks turn out to be real, officials stressed that the danger of the flu remains far greater.

WA’s chief public health officer Tarun Weeramanthri has defended the response time in closing down the state’s juvenile flu vaccine program amid revelations that children were presenting with convulsions more than two weeks ago.

More than 60 children around the state may have had adverse reactions to the vaccine, including fevers, vomiting and febrile convulsions – a type of fit brought on by a high fever.

One child remains in a critical condition in hospital after being given the vaccine. Dr Weeramanthri said he had few details on the child’s condition but they were “seriously ill”.

He said a national process set by the Therapeutic Goods Administration had been observed in responding to the reactions. Under the process the best clinical information was collected from as many doctors as possible and an assessment made on the “totality of that”.

“We take all reports very seriously and we believe we’ve acted in a very timely fashion,” Dr Weeramanthri said.

“We’ve been monitoring the situation, we’ve been talking to clinicians and we’ve acted as soon as we can.”

He said that since this year’s vaccine program started a month ago, 23 children under the age of 10 had presented to Princess Margaret Hospital with convulsions related to vaccinations they had received less than 12 hours before.

The number of children suffering adverse reactions after receiving the free seasonal flu vaccine may be severely underestimated because health authorities have no way of monitoring people’s reactions, experts say.

Australian doctors have been warned not to give the seasonal flu vaccine to children under the age of five, after a child fell critically ill and dozens more suffered serious adverse reactions after receiving the vaccine in Western Australia.

Other states, including Queensland and South Australia, are also reporting incidents of children being hospitalised and having adverse reactions such as fevers and convulsions.

Queensland Health says three children have been hospitalised and 41 have had adverse reactions, but only 15 of those cases were children under the age of five.

A West Australian mum who had her three-year-old daughter and her one-year-old twins vaccinated two weeks ago told ABC Local Radio in Perth that things started to go wrong just three hours after her children had their flu shots.

“My three-year-old started shaking. She went purple and she was trembling and she couldn’t stop, so I rushed her down to Margaret Hospital,” she said.

“While I was at the hospital I got a phone call from my husband saying the twins were vomiting and were very sick so I’ve raced home to them.”
