July 2nd, 2010

Did you know that some headaches occurred only in women and not men? We all know how common headaches are among many people. No matter which gender or age they are in, you are sure to have experienced at least one headache during your life time. So what exactly are these headaches that are so unique to women? Hormonal headaches also referred to as hormone headaches occur in almost every woman the moment they pass puberty. As the name suggests, hormonal headaches result from the change of hormones in the body. The hormones in our body carry out major tasks that include the stimulation of growth, regulate the metabolism level, and also regulate the production of other hormones in the body.Due to a change in the hormones and various other reasons, the hormonal headaches can occur in a moderate level and sometimes turn into more severe cases. Women have a certain level of estrogen and progesterone in their body. When these levels fluctuate, a woman could end up with hormonal headaches. Many women experience hormonal headaches during their menstrual cycle. Sometimes it could occur 11 or 22 days before the menstrual cycle starts and then last for a few days. Symptoms for hormonal headaches include having a migraine like headache, and extreme sensitivity to outside loud noises and light.

It is a little known (or little recognized) fact that women experience are more likely to experience headaches than men do.

Science believes that women may have more painful headaches than men, as well. Naturally, there are a number of factors that come into play when considering an individual’s chances of developing headaches, and the frequency of such problems. Age, genetics, and family history can all play a role, but for women, there are a couple of other factors to be considered.

Hormone levels and birth control pills (which tamper with current levels or introduce synthetic hormones to the body) are both possible factors in the headache equation.

As stated, there are several factors that can play a role in someone’s chances of getting headaches. For example, age appears to be a big factor. The older one gets, theoretically, the more prone one is to experiencing headaches. People with a family history of being susceptible to the problem are also at increased risk, though whether or not there is a concrete genetic link is still uncertain. However, women have come to note that changes in hormones can often be accompanied by headaches.

August 30, 2009

Our daughters nightmare following the first and subsequent Gardasil vaccinations – April to September 2009.

On Tuesday 28 April 2009 our daughter visited her GP’s rooms in order to have cold symptoms checked – temperatures, congestion etc. Whilst there her GP asked whether she had the Cervical Cancer vaccinations, to which she replied that she hadn’t due to being absent from school (being chronically fatigued to the point where we had to withdraw her officially from year 12 in 2008). As the free vaccinations were due to cease as of 30 June 2009, her GP suggested our daughter commence the immunisation programme, and she therefore had her first vaccination. Her arm was rather sore and she got an immediate headache.

She was asked to come back in a month to have the second vaccination.

On Tuesday 26 May she again visited her GP and had a second Cervical Cancer vaccination. Upon leaving the surgery she almost fainted on the street and over the next few days experienced painful headaches, hot and cold temperatures, she vomited a couple of times, blacked out momentarily, and had stomach pains. She also started drinking large quantities of water which didn’t quench her thirst.

Over the next three weeks she progressively felt more unwell with headaches, fatigue, and experienced cold symptoms, ie congestion, cough, muscle aches and a sore throat.

Newswise — Headaches are a widespread problem in the United States, affecting roughly 45 million people. Migraine headaches affect millions of Americans each year they are the most common type of headache that sends patients running to their doctor’s office. Migraines occur when constricting blood vessels in the brain cause intense, recurring vascular headaches. Like other forms of headaches, women suffer from migraines more frequently than men.

Approximately three out of four migraine sufferers are women. Researchers have often cited hormones as a possible explanation. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than half of migraines in women transpire right before, during or after a woman has her menstrual period. And although some women experience migraines throughout their cycle, menstrual-related migraines may explain one trigger of the condition.

Right before a woman’s cycle begins, the levels of estrogen and progesterone drop sharply. This decrease in hormone levels may initiate migraine headaches because estrogen has been shown to control brain chemicals that affect pain sensation in women.

“Like in all neurological diseases, a combination of genetics and environment play a role,” says Richard Pearl, MD, a clinical neurologist in Suffolk County, N.Y. “One environmental factor is estrogen but a genetic predisposition has been firmly established.”

Although hormones are unlikely to explain the entire picture, a recent study revealed that women with a history of migraines may be less likely to develop breast cancer than other women. Because breast cancer has been linked to higher lifetime exposure to estrogen, the fact that migraines are more common when there is a drop in estrogen may support the hormone theory.

Christopher Li, MD, PhD, a cancer epidemiologist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Wash. and study co-author is interpreting the results with caution. “It may be the treatments used for migraines,” Li told Scientific America, which include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. But if the painkillers are excluded, the lower levels of estrogen may be responsible for lower breast cancer rates and migraine headaches.

The symptoms, duration and frequency of migraines can vary greatly from person to person. They may be debilitating for some people. Often times, migraines can come along with sensory warning signs such as seeing flashes of light, blind spots or feeling nauseous (with or without vomiting). Other symptoms include:

- Intense, throbbing pain on one, or sometimes, both sides of the head.
- Feeling “pins and needles” in a limb.
- Sensitivity to light or loud sounds.
- Pain that worsens with physical activity and/or interferes with daily functioning

VUE Weekly

Edmonton, Canada
Week of May 7, 2009
Connie Howard / health@vueweekly.com

I think it’s safe to say we’re all sick of being warned about the coming pandemic of the new strain of the H1N1 virus. A new hybrid with genes from human, avian and swine flu viruses, it’s newly transmittable between humans, and we have little or no immunity to it. So wash your hands, they keep saying, because like the devastating 1918 flu, it’s reaching young and old. Be ready for a wildfire. Be afraid, but not too afraid.

But aside from the fact that there are more potent protections than washing our hands, the 1918 pandemic (once thought to be swine flu and now known to have been a strain of bird flu), started among soldiers in the squalor of the front, where exhaustion, malnutrition and enormous stress surely left them immune compromised. Soldiers then carried the virus to equally fatigued, malnourished, stressed and grieving communities at home. It’s not surprising it spread like wildfire.

That’s not to say we shouldn’t pay attention to the new virus—precaution is always wise. But there’s precaution, and there’s precaution. And there’s the use of fear to prepare the public for mass vaccination and antiviral drug programs—in 2006, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued an international call for all nations to increase public demand for annual flu shots as the main strategy to prepare for a flu pandemic. Now the WHO has announced that researchers and manufacturers are poised to start on a swine-flu vaccine. Which would be fine if vaccines weren’t such a muddy issue.

Within months of the nationwide vaccine program in the US for the 1976 swine flu outbreak there were 30 vaccine-induced deaths from Guillain-Barre syndrome, the same paralyzing nerve disease linked to Gardasil reactions. Hundreds more went on to develop non-fatal but paralyzing forms of the disease. And then the vaccine program was cancelled, and the epidemic never happened.

But that was a relatively benign strain of virus, experts are saying, this one could be different. Could be, or not. Viruses mutate to survive, which means they tend to mutate to become less virulent rather than more so—they can’t survive in a dead host.

It’ll be months before a new swine-flu vaccine is ready for public use. So, to be ready for major outbreaks, 12.5 million doses of antiviral drugs (Tamiflu and Relenza) have been released from government stockpiles—stockpiles with limited shelf life purchased for billions of dollars in 2005 in anticipation of the bird flu.

Tamiflu, which reduces the duration of flu symptoms by a whopping 1.5 days and actually increases the risk of secondary bacterial infections, has been extremely problematic with respect to adverse reactions. A warning was issued in 2006 after 25 people had died, and hundreds more were having hallucinations and injuring themselves, and experiencing respiratory failure, heart palpitations, convulsions, nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, coughing and fatigue—all of which sounds very much like a bad flu to me.

New strains of viruses aren’t new. Projections of millions of deaths from bird flu a few years ago amounted to under 300 deaths worldwide since 2003. Lightning strikes kill many more than that each year, and malaria kills thousands every single day.

And excessive caution comes with risks that go beyond treatment and vaccine risks. Instituting border controls has the potential to disrupt world trade and worsen the current recession—severely disrupted food, energy and medical supply chains would have serious consequences.

But there is, despite what they’re telling us, a reason to avoid pork tenderloin—not because eating it carries risk of infection, but because mass avoidance of it would discourage the practice of factory farming. (Something vegetarians and consumers of organic mixed farming products have been working on for a while.) Massive industrial hog farms operated by US meat giants are breeding grounds for disease, pollute our earth and turn out inferior quality food. Every step away from them is a good one. V

It’s estimated that 40 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches. Headaches are one of the leading causes of missed work or school. So why is it that so many of us suffer from such annoying and often debilitating pains in the head? Honestly, there are several reasons.

Some of the most common triggers of migraines are stress, food allergies, caffeine withdrawal, medications, lack of sleep, extreme weather conditions, blood sugar fluctuations, and hormone imbalances.

Many migraine suffers find little or no relief in either over-the-counter or prescription medications. And, even for those that do, rebound headaches are often a resulting side effect.

When suffering from chronic headaches, it is important to learn your triggers. Keep a diary that tells the date, time, weather conditions, foods eaten in the last 24 hours, emotional stressors, amount of sleep, drugs taken or, if you are a female, where you are in your menstrual cycle. Determining your triggers can take you a long way towards reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines.

Once you have eliminated many of the triggers (yes, through hard work and dedication), you may find your headaches arrive pre or post menstrual. You have just discovered that your migraines are triggered by hormones. Oh yes, the same lovely chemical that gives us mood swings, cramps, bloating, breast tenderness and those horrible chocolate cravings will also cause your migraine headaches.

If you fall into this category, there is hope beyond medication. It’s important to understand that this will require a commitment on your part. Balancing hormones can be a tedious and difficult prospect but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Estrogen dominance is the most frequent cause of hormone imbalances.

Here are a few keys to remember about estrogen dominance.

Fat stores estrogen. The more weight you gain, the more estrogen you will retain.

Stress produces cortisol which boosts estrogen levels.

A toxic liver, from excess alcohol or pollution, will not filter estrogen out of our bodies.

Many of the foods we eat are fed estrogens to make them grow and produce more food. Eating meat and diary products will increase your estrogen levels.

Plastic containers, pesticides and cleaning chemicals produce xeno-estrogens, chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body.

Skipping periods, whether by choice through the use of birth control pills or by nature, will prevent the release of progesterone which keeps estrogen levels in balance.

It’s no wonder girls as young as 7 and 8 are now starting their menstrual cycles.

So what are the answers? You can beat hormone caused migraine headaches through good nutrition and supplementation as well as regular exercise. Here are some suggestions.

Start shopping for hormone free meats. These can be found in health food stores or ordered online.

Use non-toxic household cleaners and non-toxic pesticides whenever possible.

Make sure you are getting at least 30 grams of fiber every day. If you aren’t eating enough to get this amount, be sure to supplement with a quality fiber product. Fiber binds to estrogen helping to remove it from the body.

Vitamins A, C, B12 and E along with magnesium, selenium, calcium and anti-oxidants are essential to maintaining a healthy hormone balance.

Supplement with DHEA. This hormone precursor promotes the development of progesterone which will keep estrogen in check.

And, of course, there is progesterone cream. Be sure to select a high quality progesterone cream that offers no less than 500 mg of progesterone that is not synthetic.

Also consider adding in Milk Thistle. This herb has a wonderful track record for cleansing and supporting the liver.

If you are unsure of what products to use or which steps to take, be sure you work with someone that is familiar with natural alternatives. They should be able to guide you in your decision making process.

By taking these steps, you should be on your way to improved health with a wonderful side effect, no more MIGRAINES!

For many women, PMS is a nightmare come true. For the uninitiated, Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a disorder that adversaly affects women around one to two weeks before periods. While such mood changes have been described at the time of the ancient. Greeks, it was Katharina Dalton, a physician and women’s health pioneer, who first identified this cyclic phenomenon. Her book,’ Once A month ,’ set standard for many books and PMS studies. Dr. Arti Luthra, private practitioner and Gynaecologist says, “PMS is very common disorder among women of 30-40. But there is little awareness about this.”

Symptoms

Acne, anxiety, backache, breast swelling, cramps, tenderness, swelling, cramps, tenderness, depression, food cravings, fainting spells, headaches, joint pain, insomnia, skin eruption, nervousness.

Why PMS?

The physical responses to PMS can also be caused by a problem known as by a problem known as endometriosis, a condition most likely caused by a hormone imbalance in which tissue that looks and acts like the lining of the uterus is found outside of the uterus in the pelvis. At menstruation, this tissue bleeds lightly. The blood irritates nearby tissue and causes pain. Most experts agree, that PMS has something to do with the imbalance of estrogen, progesterone in the latter part of the menstrual cycle, the adrenal hormones that control water retention, and mood influencing chemical substances in the brain.

Women with PMS tend to have low levels of serotonin-a condition that can cause early or delayed ovulation and trigger an imbalance of estrogen-progesterone. The bottom line is that low serotonin affect ovulation, and “less than perfect ovulation” lowers levels of serotonin in the brain, leading to vicious cycle known as PMS. An article in the New England Journal of Medicine found that women suffered from PMS were also often found to have a subtle low thyroid condition.

Taking Control of PMS

Keeping a menstrual diary, recording symptoms and when they occur by ranking them on a scale of 01 to 10, keeping a record continuously for 3 months wound help.

Lifestyle Modifications

Eating right- instead of traditional “three square meals a day”, women prone to PMS should try eating 3 small meals, 3 snacks daily. Eat fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains cereale, nuts, breads, beans, peas, seeds, chicken fish etc.
Exercise – Increases oxygen levels in blood, which helps in nutrient absorption and efficient elimination of toxins from the body and to keep hormone levels more stable.

See a physician – To rule out an underlying medical condition that may be causing symptoms, such as abnormal thyroid function, endometriosis, or genuine psychological problem like depression.

Avoid – Smoking and caffeine. Don’t consume alcohol or sugar in any from, like bread, chocolates, jams and dairy products.

Managing PMS

While Dr Luthra has found Pyridoxine and Evening Primrose oil helpful Primrose oil helpful while treating her patients, many treating her patients, many Vitamins and supplements are effective in alleviating symptoms.

Vitamin E – Has been shown to be helpful for the breast problems, mood swings, irritability. Magnesium is classified as ‘nature’s tranquilliser’, It is vital in treating those aspects of the PMS that relate to anxiety. When taken with Vitamin B6 it become more effective. GLA Omega 6 essential fatty acids (linoleic acid) are converted to gamma linolenic acid (GLA) that is found in plants such as evening primrose, borage and starflower. Spironolactone, a medication that blocks hormone responsible for bloating, swelling, can relieve PMS responses. In certain cases, birth control therapy in for of oral contraceptives is used to suppress and regulate ovulation and lessen PMS responses overall. Since synthetic progesterone used in certain birth control pills has actually been shown to cause PMS, great care and experience are necessary in managing this therapy.

Other management involves antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil, Sarafem, Zoloft, which raise levels of serotonin. These medications have proven to be effective in PMS symptoms because they block the break down of serotonin in the brain, increase amount of serotonin will have to live with.

There will always be good, better, best days, but by taking control of PMS, learning how to live life out from under the black cloud of PMS, it is possible to learn how to feel better all month long.

April 28, 2009

Is your body loaded with harmful toxins? Well, if you were not very active this winter you may just be.

Sick, sluggish and mentally drained?

You may not realize it, but you may be one of millions who struggle with chronic illness and think it’s “just a part of life?”

I’m talking about silly little things that most people shrug off as irritants. Symptoms like fatigue, headaches, joint pain…even brain fog.

Our bodies come equipped with a wonderfully designed internal detoxification system that’s main purpose is to keep toxins from harming us. This system includes the liver, kidneys even our skin.

However, what do you think happens when this system become overloaded from…

Poor quality food…

Too many medications…

Overexposure to antibiotics…

Heavy metal poisoning…

Dangerous chemicals and pesticides…

Food allergens…

Hidden infections…

These enemies attack our system every day without giving it rest. As a result our systems can stop working properly and require some help to reboot (just like your computer).

Because of stress, poor food and a toxic environment, our systems face increasing pressure, making the need for such rest and support greater than ever.

Unfortunately, our modern lifestyles expose us to an increasingly complex (and deteriorating) environment, so that our detoxification systems must work overtime (without a break) in order to process the toxins we encounter in everyday life.

Imagine working your car 24 hours a day, 365 days a year without changing the oil, air filter or spark plugs.

You see why rest is important. Without it, your body may start to break down and become sick.

Are you sick?

Please use the following link to see if you are experiencing any of these 20 common symptoms of a toxic system.

What’s more important is that studies have shown that an impaired detoxification from exposure to toxins can lead to more serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s, arthritis, cancer, heart disease, even Parkinson’s.

Go to the website below now to learn what you can do to even the odds and keep your internal detoxification system working the way it was designed to.

A uterus is required for menses. Does the possibility exist that men have the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)? Can the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome be associated with the male species? Due to the numerous symptoms associated with PMS, this essay deals with the symptoms of: irritability and stress, food cravings and weight gain, headaches . Just mentioing PMS makes some people irritable.

How people express their irritability differs from each person. Some people express their irritable mood with body language. Such as, when a person throws his or her hands up in the air, and says, “touch me and die,” this is a good indication that they are irritable. Most people’s personalities control how they react to anger. Most people’s personalities differ. Some people feel hostile, while others just show hostility. Most men say, “that they are just stressed out.” Most men think that when women get stressed out, it is due to a hormone-imbalance due to PMS. Some people get food cravings when their hormones are imbalanced.

Hormones control when people feel get cravings. Most people crave certain foods. Whether, the chocolate melts in their hands, the toppings are piled on the pizza, or they feel the need to lick the inside of the potato chip bag; people get cravings. Cravings can influence a person’s diet. Some people eat healthy foods and exercise. They control their craving and eating habits. Other people give in to their bodies natural cravings. Some men use the excuse that they have a “sweet tooth” when they have a craving. But, most men say that when some women eat “they are stuffing their mouths.” If a person does not exercise enough, and gives into too many cravings, they can get overweight. With ninety percent of the American adult population overweight; a lot of people are giving in to their cravings. Some people substitute food for affection. Others eat just because they are bored. Some people eat when they get depressed.

Most people get depressed at some point in their lives. Hormone-imbalances can cause depression. Depression happens to some people when they have PMS. Hormones get released by certain hormone-producing glands into the body. The brain uses these hormones to dictate what emotions a person has. When the hormone that produces depression gets released, a person gets depressed. A person may feel like they are not wanted, or needed by others. They may feel like what they do is not good enough for other people. Some people deal with depression by crying, while others just stay in their homes. Depression is a symptom of PMS, and most people get depressed. Most men say that “they are just down, or feeling a little depressed”. If women get depressed, most men use the excuse, ” women are just too damn emotional,” or they say, “it is just PMS, she will get over it when she starts her menstrual period.”

Do men have the symptoms of PMS? The answer depends on which of the sexes a person asks. If someone where to ask a man the answer would, probably be no. If a person were to ask a woman the answer would, probably be yes. Can men have menstrual periods? No, they do not have uteri. Do both sexes have similar symptoms? Yes, but they are called by different names. Do men have the symptoms every 28 days? No, most men have symptoms more often.

I’ve recently collected another daunting pile of questions regarding the health benefits of sex.

Through the years of my career, and I imagine through the ages of all humanity, this has been a resurfacing question. Typically I answer questions pertaining to the health benefits of sex on a one-on-one basis, but since I know that there are many more men out there who are asking themselves the same question I thought it admissible to address the topic here.

Many people simply enjoy a healthy sex life because sex is pleasurable. Now there’s another reason to stay under the sheets; there are substantial health benefits of sex. Enjoying a rigorous romp can do wonders for everyone both physically and psychologically. Now, men everywhere can tell their ladies that sex is not only for fun, but, since there are health benefits of sex, their lives may depend on it.

The following are six different reasons why sex and sexual activity may help you live a longer, happier life due to the health benefits of sex:

1. Sex Can Cure Headaches

All those times that you were told, “Not tonight honey, I have a headache,” all you had to do was inform your woman that one of the health benefits of sex is its ability to act as a pain reliever. The hormone oxytocin (a nine amino acid peptide that is synthesized in hypothalamic neurons and transported down axons of the posterior pituitary for secretion into blood) secretes within your body whenever you engage in sexual activity.

Because of this secretion, endorphins (hormone-like chemicals that bear a close functional resemblance to morphine) are released. When a person is aroused or excited, oxytocin levels not only begin to increase, they are the reason that orgasms come about. Studies have shown that a rise in oxytocin levels can relieve pain; everything from headaches, cramps and overall body aches can be diminished with a simple roll in the hay.
