As if it weren’t enough that we feel crappy when we’re PMSing or ovulating. (Got mittelschmerz? No, it’s not a type of German lager … it’s those strange mid-cycle cramps!) Turns out that our hormones could influence behavior, immunity — and yeah, even our bank accounts at different points in our cycle.

For instance, you may have heard that British scientists found that we’re more likely to overspend when we’re premenstrual. Yep, two-thirds of PMSing respondents had “bought something on impulse.”

That explains so many clothing items that now hang in my closet unworn. Sigh.

Here, even more ways our hormones are messing with us — for better or for worse — throughout the month. After all, it (literally) pays to know …

1. We dance sexier when we’re ovulating. If you’ve ever considered trying amateur night at a strip club, you’ll probably do your best if you go when you’re mid-cycle. One study found that erotic dancers made $335 per 5-hour shift during their fertile phase vs. $185 during menstruation. The likely reason? Their dancing is more “solicitous.”

Ladies: Do you sometimes engage in compulsive shopping? Do you find yourself purchasing items on impulse or wildly exceeding your budget?

Newly published research suggests this troubling tendency can be curtailed, simply by changing the time you visit the mall.

Not the time of day. The time of the month.

Writing in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, British psychologists Karen Pine and Ben Fletcher report the shopping behavior of women is influenced by where they are in their menstrual cycle. According to their first-of-its-kind study, a pre-menopausal woman is more likely to make excessive or impulsive purchases the further she is into her cycle.

The researchers, who are with the University of Hertfordshire, conducted a study of 443 women between the ages of 18 and 50, who were recruited through “an editorial piece in a popular monthly women’s magazine.” After providing information on the length of their menstrual cycle and their last menses, the women filled out a survey regarding their buying habits over the previous week.

Specifically, they rated on a 1-to-5 scale (from strongly agree to strongly disagree) such statements as “In the last seven days, my spending has been out of control,” and “I have bought something I am unlikely to wear or use.”

Amanda Hess
Sex and gender at work, in bed and on the street

October 5, 2010 – 02:30 PM

From 1994 to 1998, Department of Defense employee Harry Finley curated and operated the Museum of Menstruation out of his suburban Maryland basement. The museum exists now only online and in storage boxes in Finley’s home.

But the years Finley spent assembling, displaying, and defending this collection of historical menstruation artifacts left him with a blocked coronary and a dream: That the culture of menstruation that had consumed Finley would one day be publicly available, out in the open, at a real museum.

Finley, 68, took the time to speak with me about the emotional drain of menstruation curating, the lingering taboo of the subject, and the sexist responses to Finley’s obsession:

Why menstruation: “I wanted to do something interesting and even make a contribution to the world. And this is something that had never been done before, a Museum of Menstruation. It certainly livened my life up, that’s for sure. It had been pretty boring, I have to say, and the museum was the exact opposite of that. But it became too much after a while.”

On the emotional drain of menstruation curating: “I closed it 12 years ago in 1998 because I was totally worn out. I was working full time for the Department of Defense, and I was doing the museum in all of my spare time, on weekends, often in the evening. . . . Oh my god, it was all-consuming. I had to have a splint put in one of my coronary arteries nine months after I closed it. I was just screaming for a vacation, something just to get away from it. . . . And then there was the nature of the museum itself. Menstruation. And there was all the media attention focused on why someone, a guy, was doing this. I know that many people have small museums in their homes that go on year after year after year. But it’s not menstruation. It’s gumballs, or crazy paintings, or something like that. Something that just doesn’t have the emotional impact of doing what I was doing.”

On the menstruation taboo: “It’s not a polite thing to talk about in casual society. I’ve gotten so used to this now that it’s no big deal for me. But it is for other people. Especially coming from some guy. I really get, sometimes, a horrified reaction. I can tell by the stares and the silence. Even from liberal people. When I started the museum, I thought, ‘Oh boy, this would not bother them.’ But it still bothers basically everybody. Almost every reaction is negative. . . . I think a lot of it is the association of a male doing this. Like, what is his interest in this?”

On menstruation: “My own personal feelings with menstruation are probably not different from most men. Menstruation itself, I don’t find it appealing. And I think that most men feel that way, that it’s an impediment to sex, it’s messy. I strongly suspect this goes back hundreds if not thousands of years. It’s just something which is not an attractive thing.. . . Most men, like most women, are not interested in it as a subject. However, I really think if this were in a public museum, accessible to anyone who just wants to walk in, they could be made very interested.”

Leslie Carol Botha, Women’s Health Educator, author, publisher, and broadcast journalist is an internationally recognized expert on women’s hormonal health. Her work emphasizes the significance of the hormone cycle and its profound relationship to women’s psyche. Botha’s 30 years of research demonstrates how hormone changes/fluctuations in the menstrual cycle affect women’s physical, mental and emotional well being.

Botha is a member of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research, and an advisory board member for the Cycles Research Institute.

In 2006, Botha received the Edward R. Dewey Award for her pioneering research on how women’s hormonal fluctuations affect their behaviors. The award was granted by the Foundation for the Study of Cycles.

Her research is also featured in a new book titled: The World According to Cycles- How Recurring Forces Can Predict the Future and Change Your Life by Samuel A. Schreiner, Jr., published by Skyhorse Publishing, New York City. Schreiner named Botha “one of the 21st century’s most prominent natural cycle researchers.”

In 2007, Botha received a certificate of study and training in Whole Health and Whole Health Sciences from the National Institute of Whole Health. NIWH has been the pioneer in providing Whole Health Education® and Whole Health Care® since 1977. The organization is aligned with Harvard, Duke and Vanderbilt Universities and the Mayo Clinic to bring credentialing to health and wellness coaching. The National Institute of Whole Health (NIWH) is a nationally Accredited Provider of Professional Continuing Education and Development programs, endorsed and approved by leading national health care organizations.

Currently Botha and her co-author Sandra H. Chevalier-Batik are developing a health curriculum for adolescents titled “Girl’s Empowered – Boy’s Empowered: A Comprehensive Curriculum on Adolescent Health.” The curriculum focuses on menstrual health education within an educational social, political and historical context of women’s worth, value and rights.

Botha and Batik have just released their e-book titled: Understanding Your Mood, Mind and Hormone Cycle; the first in a series on menstrual health education.

Botha is currently the host of her own radio show titled “Holy Hormones Honey – The Greatest Story Never Told” on KRFC FM. The hour-long show airs the first and third Mondays of the month from 6-7 pm MST.

Botha is a member of Truth About Gardasil. She is a part of the growing number of parents, educators and researchers concerned about the potential dangers of Gardasil and Cervarix. She was one of six women involved in presenting research and data on those dangers to the FDA.

Her concerns lie in the fact that hormone fluctuations and menstrual cycle evaluation are not a part of the study or trial guidelines conducted by the pharmaceutical companies prior to inoculating of girls entering menarche – one of the most fragile times of their lives.

She has been interviewed for print and broadcast media for her research on the importance of women’s hormonal health and her well researched views on the HPV vaccines.

Dr. Andrew Moulden returns to KRFC FM on June 15 to Discuss
Vaccination-Induced Brain Damage

Toni Blake with the SBS Defense Fund will follow on July 6 to discuss Shaken Baby Syndrome and the parents falsely accused of injuring or causing the death of their infant due to pre-existing neurological damage.

How many SBS cases are related to vaccine-induced brain damage?

June 10, 2009 Fort Collins, CO. Due to popular demand, Canadian physician, Dr. Andrew Moulden BA, MA, MD, PhD , and leader of the Canadian Action Party will rejoin radio talk show host, Leslie Botha, safe vaccine advocate and researcher, Cynthia Janak and Dr. Judi Gerstung on KRFC FM 88.9 , Monday, June 15 from 6 to 7 pm MST on Holy Hormones Honey the Greatest Story Never Told! The show will be audio streamed via the KRFC web site.

This will be Dr. Moulden’s second interview on KRFC FM. During the first on June 1, he explained how and why all vaccines cause neurological damage. Thousands of people listened to the interview since
news of the program spread throughout the Autism and Gardasil communities.

One of the most stunning comments that Dr. Moulden issued is that everyone has been “vaccine damaged” in one form or another. He believes that the high incidences of cancers, elderly neurological problems, immune disorders and other diseases are due to processes that have already been put into place after an inoculation. Repeated vaccinations only speed along the processes by which vaccine induced damage – which, according to Dr. Moulden are “cumulative, summative and additive,” leading to a myriad of pathological problems that are now pervasive to society.

Based on Dr. Moulden’s theory the burden of responsibility to prove vaccine damage will be taken out of the hands of the so-called “isolated pockets” of children and their parent’s into a larger realm of brain injury and disease that has affected millions of vaccinated people worldwide. This is an important point since the U.S. and other countries including the U.K., are currently considering mandating compulsory vaccination laws to be enforced by the end of this year.

On Monday, July 6, Toni Blake J.D., M.A., who jointly owns and operates SBSDefense.com with 2nd
Chair Services will be interviewed on behalf parents who have been falsely accused of Shaken Baby Syndrome due to pre-existing neurological conditions that may have occurred post-vaccination. This is another aspect of vaccine injury involving the innocent families of brain-damaged infants that is rarely explored and been exposed.

Ms. Blake is a Juris Doctorate, has a Masters in Cognitive Social Psychology and is an Associate Professor of Psychology with an extensive research background in jury decision-making and cognitive psychology in the courtroom. She is the author of and has published numerous books and articles. The Chicago Union Tribune, DISCOVER Magazine, Washington University Law Review, and American Association of Physicians and Surgeons have covered Ms. Blake’s research. She has been a guest lecturer for law schools, bar associations and medical conventions. Some of Ms. Blake’s high profile cases have appeared on Court TV, Dateline, 20/20, as well as in other international media outlets and television shows.

According to the Shaken Baby Syndrome web site, when retinal hemorrhages and subdural hematomas are found in a child, current reporting laws mandate that an immediate referral be made to child protective services, unless the caretaker has an incident that comports with a 2-3 story fall, or a 35 mile per hour unrestrained car accident. The credibility of a caregiver’s story is the determining factor of whether a child receives a diagnosis of “SBS” or not -and whether a caregiver is charged. Of course, the caregiver’s
credibility is also at question and opens doors for biased profiling.

Unfortunately, for the parents, the hemorrhages and hematomas may be due to a pre-existing neurological condition that is not acknowledged by the medical, police, or social service institutions. Family lives are
shattered when one or both parents are charged with SBS, other children removed from the home –and placed in “protective custody.”
