The feminine hygiene company admits: Commercials with horse-riding girls and blue liquids are ridiculous

Kotex may be using all this empowerment to sell their bitchin’ new pads in a cool black box, but if somewhere in the package they’re also selling girls on the notion that their bodies and their functions are nothing to be ashamed of, nothing to be afraid of, and they’re no damn field of daisies either, that’s just fine. It might even be worth doing cartwheels over.

Whether she is a princess or a demon, it can be a daunting task for a father to know how to raise his daughter, Christchurch-based clinical psychologist Nigel Latta says.

In order to help men who might feel out of their depth, Latta has this week released a book called Fathers Raising Daughters.

Part of the reason for writing the book was because it was becoming more and more common for fathers to have sole responsibility for their children

The pill is the most popular form of contraception in the UK and, if used correctly, is 99% effective. 28% of women aged 16-49 use it. It comprises of artificial sex hormones related to oestrogen and progesterone (sometimes progesterone alone; the mini pill). The pill completely changes the behaviour of a woman’s cycle, suppressing fluctuations and stopping ovulation entirely.

Typically, girls are told the pill is the best form of contraception. But recently GPs have noticed a rise in women requesting other types of contraception.
“The pill made me crazy, I became really irrational and paranoid. It also put a huge strain on my relationship. At the end of the day, it just wasn’t worth it,” says Meredith*.

Exercising – best remedy for period pains

Exercising has been found to be the best remedy for period pains though many women are either unaware of it or hate it. A local general practitioner Dr Nida Razi said most women prefer to lie down and rest when they experience the pain, but said that can only worsen the situation as it causes more inflammation.

More than 50 percent of all women who are in their menstrual age are said to have experienced period pains in their lives. About 70 percent of women get period pains during their menstrual period with 15 percent of them reporting severe pains, observed Dr Trisha.

More women appear to be experiencing early menopause, a recent study has indicated.

A total of 6,831 women in their 30s and below were treated in 2008 for insomnia, depression, lethargy and other disorders stemming from their cessation of menstruating, the National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC) said Sunday.

“Taking into account that only those who suffer from these side effects were counted in the survey, the actual number of women with early menopause could be much higher,” it said.
