Abstract

Background: The relationship between menopausal characteristics and later life mortality is unclear. We tested the hypotheses that women with surgical menopause would have increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality compared with women with natural menopause, and that women with earlier ages at natural or surgical menopause would have greater all-cause and cardiovascular mortality than women with later ages at menopause.

Methods: Women who participated in the Iowa cohort of the Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (n=1684) reported menopausal characteristics and potential confounding variables at baseline and were followed up for up to 24 years. Participants were aged 65 years or older at baseline and lived in rural areas. We used survival analysis to examine the relationships between menopausal characteristics and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

Results: A total of 1477 women (87.7% of respondents) died during the study interval. Women with an age at natural menopause ≥55 years had increased all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality compared with women who had natural menopause at younger ages. Type of menopause and age at surgical menopause were not related to mortality. These patterns persisted after adjustment for potential confounding variables.

Conclusions: Among an older group of women from a rural area of the United States, later age at natural menopause was related to increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Monitoring the cardiovascular health of this group of older women may contribute to improved survival times.

Curt Linderman Sr.
Infowars.com
February 3, 2012

As of Dec. 2011, there have been 24,610 documented adverse reactions associated with the HPV vaccines, 3,269 have been serious. Given the fact that data from the VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) database and the National Vaccine Information Center claim that less than 10% of adverse reactions are actually reported, these numbers could be far more frightening.

Sane Vax, an HPV vaccine victim’s advocacy group (www.sanevax.org) recently sent an open letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (1). In this letter and subsequent articles pertaining to HPV Vaccine injuries, it is explained that all drugs given a “fast track” or accelerated approval process through the Food and Drug Administration, are required to verify and prove the fast tracked drug is actually effective and safe through post marketing studies (2). Gardacil was one of those “fast tracked” drugs, despite the fact that I can’t seem to remember the epidemic of young women dropping in the streets, succumbing to cervical cancer. There was no reason to fast track such a vaccine. This kind of tactic should only be available for epidemic and pandemic viruses.

A recently published, and industry sponsored, study (3) conducted on 12,852 young women seems to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that HPV vaccines are not working and even seem to be causing cancers! Gardacil and Cervarix, the two HPV vaccines manufactured at this time, only vaccinate for a small number of the human papillomavirus strains and in this study, suggest that HPV vaccination was found to reduce HPV-16 infections by a mere 0.6% in vaccinated vs. unvaccinated women.

Sane Vax states that, in the very same study, 2.6% to 6.2% more HPV vaccinated young women experienced other high risk (carcinogenic) HPV infections than unvaccinated women! When one considers the drastic numbers of adverse reactions, the lack of proof that any post marketing studies are showing success for the vaccines and the outcry from parents regarding draconian measures from governments to force girls (and now boys) to get vaccinated, Secretary Sebellius, the HHS and the FDA should immediately stop the HPV vaccine recommendations and forcibly remove the product from the market.

Why on earth would they continue to mandate these vaccines to our young girls and boys, given the facts that you, the reader, have available now? Given the PAP smears and other gynecological efforts made available to girls around the western world, this vaccine will end up being a nightmare. These girls, believing that the FDA and Secretary Sebellius have done their homework and the vaccine is both safe and effective, will believe they are protected and be less likely to go to the doctor for their checkups. This alone will cost numerous lives. Add to this, the evidence from this most recent study that vaccinated girls are getting more cancers, and you have a recipe for disaster.

If a Republican becomes president, says Michelle Goldberg, say goodbye to international programs providing birth control to women in desperately poor countries such as Liberia.

Gertrude Gorma Cole, a midwife in Liberia’s Bong County, is almost universally known as “Mother Dear.” A warm, grandmotherly presence in a traditional lappa dress, she has been practicing at least since the 1970s. In some ways, she is conservative. Speaking of Liberia’s disastrous teenage pregnancy rate—which is high even by West African standards—she blames both the social breakdown caused by the country’s savage civil war and the lax ideas of the international NGOs that swept into the country in its wake. “After the war, the NGO people came in and they brought ‘child rights,’ so the children became so loose, and even to discipline them, they will take you to the police,” she says. Western aid workers dispute this, insisting that the idea of Liberian kids informing on their parents is an urban legend. Still, her views speak to a level of distrust toward the humanitarian agencies that play an outsized role in governing the decimated nation.

Yet there is one thing Mother Dear does not distrust: the programs to provide birth control, which are largely supplied by USAID. In addition to being a midwife, Mother Dear is the county’s reproductive-health supervisor. When I tell her that support for international family planning is controversial in the U.S., and that some candidates for president would like to end it, she is shocked. “If they cut off funding for family planning, more mothers are going to die,” she says.

She’s worth listening to, because whatever effect the upcoming election has on the reproductive health of American women, the effect on women worldwide is likely to be even greater. I was in Liberia recently as part of a World Health Organization-sponsored trip to look at the future of funding for AIDS, TB, and malaria in an age of global austerity. But the country is also an object lesson in the potential global impact of our interminable culture wars.

Those culture wars have turned birth control into a significant issue in the U.S. presidential campaign. All of the Republican candidates have slammed the administration’s refusal to give religious institutions a broad exemption from the mandate that insurance cover family planning. One of them, Rick Santorum, has promised to use the presidency to speak out about “the dangers of contraception in this country,” and has said he believes states should have the right to ban it. Mitt Romney, the likely nominee, has laughed off threats to birth control as an absurd nonissue, but even he has pledged to eliminate Title X, the federal family-planning program founded under Richard Nixon.

In the interest of public health and safety, Sane Vax Inc., appeals to the
Secretary of Health and Human services to request that FDA approval of Gardasil® be rescinded
due to lack of efficacy demonstrated during post-licensure monitoring.

By Norma Erickson, President
February 2, 2012

According to a recently published, industry-sponsored study conducted on 12,852 young women, HPV vaccination was found to reduce HPV-16 infections a mere 0.6% in vaccinated women versus unvaccinated women. At the same time, other high-risk (carcinogenic) HPV infections were diagnosed in vaccinated women 2.6% to 6.2% more frequently than in the unvaccinated women. The increased rate of infections caused by carcinogenic HPV types other than those targeted by Gardasil® in vaccinated women is 4 to 10 times higher than the reduction in HPV 16/18 infections.[1]

These statistics are not exactly encouraging when it comes to demonstrating efficacy for Gardasil®. In fact, quite the opposite – these figures seem to indicate that women who receive Gardasil® may indeed increase their risk of developing cervical cancer from high-risk HPV types that are not targeted by the vaccine.

Medical consumers cannot afford to take the chance of increasing their risk of contracting a disease that has been virtually eradicated by good gynecological care in the United States (cervical cancer) by taking a series of HPV vaccines and hoping they will find out decades later the vaccine worked. It is certainly not a risk children should have to take.

Armed with the knowledge that any drug approved under the FDA’s accelerated approval process using a surrogate endpoint, such as Gardasil®, requires post-marketing studies “to verify and describe the drugs clinical benefit and to resolve remaining uncertainty as to the relation of the surrogate endpoint upon which approval was based to clinical benefit…[2],” the SaneVax Team felt compelled to appeal to the person in charge of FDA/CDC oversight, Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services.

On 31 January 2012, SaneVax Inc. sent an open letter to Ms Sebelius[3] asking her to rescind approval for Gardasil® based on the lack of efficacy demonstrated in the ATHENA study referenced above.

If the Department of Health and Human Services is truly interested in public health and safety, they will do the right thing and rescind Gardasil® approval until the manufacturer can provide scientifically sound data proving this new drug is actually effective.

In the meantime, medical consumers around the globe have a choice. Is poke and hope good enough for you and your children? Or, are you going to demand scientific proof of efficacy before submitting to HPV vaccination?

Linda Morin says while she approved of her 14-year-old daughter Annabelle getting the vaccine, she didn’t know when she’d receive it.

So when Annabelle was rushed to the hospital one night for constant vomiting and a loss of memory, Morin says she didn’t know it was just days following a first dose of Gardasil.

Doctors also couldn’t make the link and diagnosed it as a simple migraine.

Annabelle then went on to get a second dose of the vaccine and a few days after that in December 2008, was found dead in the bathtub.

“I was shocked. I didn’t know what to do,” Morin says.

The family is now seeking $197 000 in damages from Merck Frosst, which markets the vaccine, and from three doctors who treated Annabelle after her first dose.

Merck Frosst refused comment when contacted by CJAD news.

By DONNA NEBENZAHL, Freelance January 28, 2012

The hazards that men face – dangerous jobs, combat, stress-related early deaths – have actually made the world safer for women, argues American political scientist Warren Farrell, author of seven books including The Liberated Man (1974) and the recently updated The Myth of Male Power.

Considered a leader of the promen movement and actively involved in lobbying the U.S. government to create a White House Council on Boys to Men, Farrell believes that just as feminism freed women from being coerced into traditional female roles, it’s time the same was done for men.

It’s all about power, Farrell says, but rather than meaning money or position, real power is having control over one’s life. “In terms of recognizing and developing their power,” he writes, “men are in a similar position today that women were in the late 1950s, at the dawn of the feminist movement.”

Men must learn from those movements rather than criticize them, he says. For instance, he describes a scenario in which women are earning a good salary, able to take care of themselves economically. “Then they will stop and say, ‘How do I take care of myself in other ways? How do I have enough time for my children, for my husband, for my private time, for my spiritual time, my time with my church? How do I have enough time to exercise? How do I have enough time to reconnect with women friends?’

“And so women start asking, once money is taken care of, ‘How do I create a balanced life?’ “

January 28, 2012

WARDHANNAPET (WARANGAL): A 55-year-old tribal woman died after taking drugs for a clinical trial at Donga Chintha Thanda in Wardhannapet mandal in Warangal district on Friday. The incident set off alarm bells once again on the dangerous consequences of trials of this nature involving poor and innocent villagers.

Tapawath Chilukamma was bedridden ever since clinical trials related to gynaecology were conducted on her by Axis Clinical Labs. Upon hearing the news of her death, villagers took out a protest rally while youth staged a rasta roko on Wardhannapet-Khammam main road shouting slogans against clinical trials.

Sources said Chilukamma was among 10 others who were taken to Hydarabad for conducting the first phase of trials on June 27, 2010. After keeping them there for 10 days and taking blood samples and testing the medicine, the women were sent back. Three women from the group started vomiting and complaining of severe physical pain soon after. Chilukamma was wracked by severe joint pains, dizziness, nausea and chest pains.

Their condition never got back to normal and a team of Central Pharmacy Board arrived at the village on June 25, 2011, and enquired with Chilukamma as to what line of experiment was done on her by Axis Lab. Two other women, Rangamma and Ratnamma, who also fell ill are still bedridden. Sources said the lab had promised Rs 8,500 each, but the women were yet to be paid the amount. Relatives and family members staged a dharna with the body of Chilukamma and demanded stringent action against the lab. BC welfare minister Baswaraju Saraiah has directed the district collector to conduct an inquiry into the clinical experiments on the innocent tribals. The villagers gheraoed RDO Sangeetha who visited the thanda and demanded action against the pharma lab.

It may be recalled that some 35 women and a few men in Piduguralla in Guntur district were also taken for clinical trials by Axis Lab last year, which earned all-round criticism. In 2009, teenage girls in tribal welfare hostels in Khammam district were given HPV vaccines (to prevent cervical cancer) like Gardasil and Cervarix. It was only after the death of five girls that the clinical trials stopped.

But according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, PFCs in non-stick cookware, clothing, furniture, and food packaging appear to be responsible for causing vaccines to fail as well, as they can reduce antibody concentrations to levels below what is considered effective for warding off disease.

Philippe Grandjean, MD, DMSc, from the Harvard School of Public Health and his colleagues evaluated 656 children born at the National Hospital in the Faroe Islands, a country located in the Norwegian Sea, between 1999 and 2001. This study location was considered ideal because people living in the region consume lots of fish, which is closely associated with high intake of PFCs.

The team measured blood serum levels of antibodies for tetanus and diphtheria toxoids in the children at ages five and seven, and compared these levels to those of various PFCs. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were found to be in the highest concentrations compared to all other PFCs, and were directly associated with lowered antibody counts.

A two-fold increase in PFOS exposure among five-year-old children, for instance, was associated with a 39 percent reduction in anti-diphtheria antibody concentration. And in seven-year-old children, a two-fold increase in PFOA exposure was associated with a 36 percent and 25 percent reduction, respectively, for tetanus and diphtheria antibodies.

“The perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are highly persistent and cause contamination of drinking water, food, and food chains,” wrote the authors. “If the associations are causal, the clinical importance of our findings is therefore that PFC exposure may increase a child’s risk for not being protected against diphtheria and tetanus, despite a full schedule of vaccinations.”

PFCs are everywhere, as evidenced by a 2004 US government study which found the chemicals in a shocking 98 percent of blood samples taken from a large pool of Americans. So if the chemicals really do inactivate vaccine potential by disabling antibodies, then vaccines may have been shown once again to be medically useless for most Americans.

Posted on January 27, 2012

The LA Times this morning reports on a new study showing than about 7% of American teens and adults carry the human papillomavirus in their mouths and this is a probable cause for much of the increase in mouth and throat cancer over the past 25 years. Where does the HPV in the mouth come from? From oral sex. And people believe oral sex is safer than intercourse. There seemed to be a correlation between the rate of infection and the frequency of oral sex.

Why are some people more affected than others? As one researcher noted, perhaps the incidence in older people is because their immune systems are weaker. What were the recommendations? Education is one and that makes sense. Inform people that they need to use “protection” for oral sex just as they do for intercourse. It is possible that the HPV vaccines would be helpful, for boys and for girls, even though we don’t know if they will work for oral cancers.

To this I say “Wait a minute!” Please understand that I am sympathetic to anyone who is experiencing an illness, including cancer. My idea of prevention, however, is NOT vaccination. Vaccines are not without their side effects. I assume, people being who we are, that oral sex has been around just about as long as humans have existed. Why now are we seeing more oral cancer? Why now have we identified more virulent strains of HPV?

Instead of using the FEAR argument: “if you don’t take this vaccine, you are more likely to get cancer,” how about approaching this from the “love” argument? I don’t mean more sex. Sex is not the same as love. Here I mean love for one’s body. I mean respect for the intelligence of our body. We don’t expect our car to last many years without properly caring for them. The same goes for our body. People, especially young people, nowadays are not as healthy as previous generations for several reasons. The food we are eating is not as nourishing, our diets are lousy, we are assaulted by a multitude of new chemicals and toxins humans never had to deal with before, and we don’t get enough sleep.

Sex is a problem for evolutionary biologists, a very big problem. (Let’s be clear: we don’t personally have any more difficulty with it than does anyone else; it’s strictly a professional problem!) And here it is: By all rights, sex shouldn’t exist. Ask most non-biologists what sex is “for,” and they’d probably answer “reproduction,” but they’d be wrong.

In fact, sex is quite simply a terrible way to reproduce.

The reality is that living things can easily make babies without sex, and many do just that. Lots of animals breed asexually, via parthenogenesis (development of an unfertilized egg, without any involvement by males); the list includes many insects, crustaceans, rotifers, flatworms, snails, even some vertebrates including certain species of shark, lizard and the occasional bird. And it’s quite common in plants.

The evolutionary conundrum is that compared to asexual reproduction, breeding sexually poses a daunting number of disadvantages, so many, in fact, that a number of highly regarded evolutionary theorists have concluded rather glumly that sex may actually be a biological liability, something that we—and other species as well—are regrettably stuck with. Here is a brief catalog of its downsides, reasons why sex is such an evolutionary dilemma. (Fear not, however. I’ll conclude, next time, with its likely saving grace.)

First, there are a number of ecological downsides. For starters, every individual who reproduces sexually needs to find a partner, which is often easier said than done. The Indonesian rhinoceros, for example, has become so rare, in part, because male and female literally have difficulty encountering each other, it seems. And we all know people who have their own troubles finding an acceptable mate. How awkward, and how much easier it would be if breeding were simply up to each would-be parent, acting on her own!

According to Aristophanes in Plato’s Symposium, ancestral human beings didn’t have this problem, because they were a bit different from today: Each had two heads, four arms and legs, and two sets of genitals, one male and one female. Every individual was thus a complete, reproductively competent package. But these characters, called Androgynes, grew uppity and self-important, so Zeus decided to diminish them by hurling thunderbolts, as was his wont. Each Androgyne was neatly split in two, and as a result, we have been doomed ever since to search the world for our missing other half. And indeed, people—like Indonesian rhinos—often fail in their quest.
