Although we are waiting eagerly for the first swine flu vaccine to hit the market, it seems production of the vaccine will be much less than the original estimates. According to a warning from the World Health Organization (WHO), supply will be much less than anticipated earlier, especially with the winter season approaching in the northern hemisphere. Per initial estimates from October onwards, about 94 million doses of vaccine could have been manufactured by the pharmaceutical companies, but this target has already been slashed by 50-75% due to poorer than expected yield from the virus strains.

…The vaccine market has emerged as one of the most lucrative segments for pharmaceutical companies. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 13% during 2009-2012. The swine flu pandemic should fuel further growth in this segment.

“…Welcome to the wonderful world of swine flu hysteria, in which health agencies – be it the World Health Organization (which declared a worldwide pandemic with just 244 deaths) or the CDC – can tell any scary story they want with the assurance that the mainstream media will never challenge them. That includes pointing to a piglet and proclaiming it to be a wild, raging boar.”

An outbreak of swine flu occurred in Mexico this spring that eventually affected 4,910 Mexican citizens and resulted in 85 deaths. By the time it spread to the United States, the virus caused only mild cases of flu-like illness.

Thanks to air travel and the failure of public health officials to control travel from Mexico, the virus spread worldwide. Despite predictions of massive numbers of deaths and the arrival of doomsday, the virus has remained a relatively mild disease, something we know happens each year with flu epidemics.
