Holy Hormones Journal: This post is a compilation of studies and articles that came across my desk today.
I think the most important article is an abstract published in December last year linking birth control pills to autism. Most of you are aware that I have been very involved on two separate issues: vaccinations and synthetic hormones. I have felt like I have to juggle both topics to be fair to my followers. But today both of those worlds collided.
Kim Strifert, MA with the Graduate School at the University of Alabama at Birmingham hypothesizes that:
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of developmental disabilities that include full syndrome autism, Asperger’s syndrome, and other pervasive developmental disorders. The identified prevalence of ASD has increased in a short time period across multiple studies causing some to conclude that it has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S.
Many possible explanations for the rise in numbers of individuals diagnosed with ASD have been offered and yet, causes and contributing factors for ASD are inadequately understood. Current evidence suggests that both genetics and environment play a part in causing ASD.
One possible risk factor for the increase in prevalence has been profoundly overlooked in the existing biomedical and epidemiologic literature. As the prevalence of ASD has risen in the last sixty years, so has the prevalence of the usage of the oral contraceptives and other modern hormonal delivery methods. In 1960 about one million American women were using oral contraceptives, today close to 11 million women in the U.S. use oral contraceptives. Eighty-two percent of sexually active women in the U.S. have used oral contraceptives at some point during their reproductive years. Thus, the growth in use of progesterone/estrogen-based contraceptives in the United State has reached near-ubiquitous levels among women in the child-bearing age range.
The suppression of ovulation produced by estrogen–progesterone is an indisputable abnormality. It is logical to consider the outcome of the ovum that would have been normally released from the ovary during ovulation. To date there is no comprehensive research into the potential neurodevelopmental effects of oral contraceptive use on progeny. The issue has been only sparsely considered in the biomedical literature. This article hypothesizes that the compounds, estrogen and progesterone, used in oral contraceptives modify the condition of the oocyte and give rise to a potent risk factor that helps explain the recent increase in the prevalence of ASD’s.
This hypothesis does not propose to delineate the cause of autism. Rather, it attempts to explain the recent dramatic increase in prevalence and point the way for further study that will lead to causal examination.
Many of you are aware that I have discussed synthetic hormones and have called them steroids. They cause inflammation in the brain. I posted an article just recently stating that women on the pill have a 40% increased risk of brain cancer.
The question is – are women on synthetic hormones unknowingly setting the stage for autism? Cynthia Janak, friend and colleague just wrote about this in her article citing that the hormone histamine is the mechanism of harm in vaccine injury.
In addition to both of these concerns, many of you are also aware of my repeating over and over again that synthetic hormones in addition to other medications and vaccines – AND in addition to daily stress, exercise and aging deplete vital nutrients from the body.
More on this issue and a more in-depth explanation will be offered on my radio show to air 2/18 when I interview Lloyd Phillips on the topic of “Emerging Infectious Diseases.”
Now for the second article. One that will be distressing to many of you who have to do shift work. A study just came out on the “Total and Cause-Specific Mortality of U.S. Nurses Working Rotating Night Shifts.”
Background: Rotating night shift work imposes circadian strain and is linked to the risk of several chronic diseases.
Purpose: To examine associations between rotating night shift work and all-cause; cardiovascular disease (CVD); and cancer mortality in a prospective cohort study of 74,862 registered U.S. nurses from the Nurses’ Health Study.
The key phrase is “circadian strain.” Is the shift work we are doing – in taking care of others – slowly killing us? Making us more susceptible to chronic disease. Circadian rhythm which my co-author and I stress in our book, Understanding Your Mind, Mood, and Hormone Cycle is endocrine rhythm – crucial for health.
So not only is our shift work throwing off our body rhythm the synthetic hormones that millions of women are taking also suppresses the essential rhythm.
Setting the stage for autism and chronic illness in our children.
Is there more? Sadly yes.
One more article came out today linking mercury exposure in fish as a risk for autoimmune disease – warning women of reproductive age to take caution.
Autoimmune diseases develop when a person’s immune system turns against their body. White blood cells, unable to tell the difference between healthy tissue and antigens — viruses, toxins, bacteria — attacks, destroying tissue and organs, sometimes even changing organ function. Common autoimmune diseases include celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Addison’s disease.
For the study, Somers and her team looked at data on women aged 16 to 49 who had participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2004. They found that women who exposed themselves to higher levels of mercury were more likely to develop precursors to autoimmune diseases called autoantibodies. These proteins, which can’t tell healthy organs from antigens, can appear years before the onset of an autoimmune disease.
Are all of these environmental factors contributing to the rampant chronic disease in children? The latest statistic I read is that 54% of our children are ill.
How is it possible that the mercury we ingest is more dangerous than the mercury in the vaccines that are injected into us? It is not. As the late, Andrew Moulden said – “heavy metal loads are cumulative, additive and summative.” Everyone has a different tipping point. The question is – how much overload is being passed in utero – setting the stage for autism and other neuro-developmental disorders and chronic illness.
And that of course, does not include heavy metal exposure from amalgam fillings, or bio-sludge or other environmental toxins we are exposed to in our homes, business, gardens, and even the playgrounds where our children play.
‘The times – they are a-changing’… and posing great risk to the future health of our population.
