The Gardasil vaccine that has gained so much attention, and a lot of controversy as well by those that claim it may not be safe and may not really guard against too much, may actually be effective at preventing another kind of cancer – anal cancer. The HPV virus which has been linked to causing cervical cancer (hence the introduction of the much ballyhooed vaccine), has also been linked to cancer of the penis, the head and the neck.
While the head and neck thing may still be up for discussion, apparently there has been enough of a protection identified against anal cancer that the vaccine is able to claim this (not sure if this claim has actually gone through FDA approval yet though, they usually have to).
The vaccine may be useful for homosexual men and also for women who may engage in anal sex for this purpose, but it’s primary purpose is really still just to protect women against getting cervical cancer from HPV.
