New Zealand’s Family Life International has released a new Gardasil for parents and caregivers. Available on the movement’s website.
The guide combines various information about the Gardasil vaccine into one easy to access document which aims to provide parents with a frank summary of the important issues surrounding Gardasil that have thus far remained largely unexplored by the recent media coverage and public marketing campaigns surrounding Gardasil, FLI says. The new guide does not explore the issue of whether increased promotion of Gardasil will result in increased promiscuity, instead it focus on issues such as the efficacy and safety of the vaccine, and other problematic issues relating to the misleading and emotive coverage of Gardasil that has accompanied its release on to the market. “Our aim with this guide is not to tell parents how to think, instead it is our hope that it will provide parents with important information so that they can make truly informed decisions about this vaccine, rather than decisions than a lack of information or misleading coverage of the Gardasil vaccine” says Family Life International’s media spokesperson Brendan Malone. In addition, the site offers a full range of information on other pro-life activities of the organisation. http://www.fli.org.nz/
A Guide for Parents and Caregivers
In recent months the New Zealand public has been subjected to an intense marketing campaign promoting the new Gardasil vaccine manufactured by the international pharmaceutical company Merck & CO. This marketing campaign has involved everything from posters in GP clinics, to radio
advertisements, and even a New Zealand website. On top of this intensive marketing campaign, the introduction of Gardasil has also been accompanied by a lot of news coverage in the mainstream media.
While the marketing campaign and the media coverage of Gardasil has been widespread and at times very emotive, it hasn’t actually fully informed Kiwi parents about all of the important facts about the vaccine. The end result of this has been that many parents have been left unable to make fully
informed decisions about this vaccine, and in some cases parents are even dramatically overestimating the actual effectiveness and safety of the Gardasil vaccine because of the lack of information that has been provided to them.
Unlike much of the current and narrowly focused coverage of the Gardasil vaccine, our hope is that this simple guide will provide parents with a broader perspective, and this will empower them with the basic information they need to make truly informed decisions about the Gardasil vaccine.

Coming soon – to a doctor near you…
Merck has been saying that they would be coming out with new ways to promote this vaccine. For those of you following the Gardasil trail – you will remember the NZ had quite a few schools who refused to offer the vaccine to their students.
As a marketing person – I find this very interesting – as an activist disturbing.
I think that this drives home the point that Gardasil is all about the products – the market and the money.
And they got the Catholic church involved -kudos to the marketing department.
