The provincial Department of Health is cancelling vaccinations for the human papillomavirus this year to young women because of the magnitude of the swine flu vaccine program.

Public health officials warned when the massive H1N1 vaccine program was announced that other medical procedures could be delayed.

The first casualty caused by the need to get the swine flu vaccine delivered across the province this fall is the HPV vaccine, which was designed to protect girls from the human papillomavirus that can lead to cervical cancer.

The Health Department now plans to double up on the number of girls receiving the HPV vaccination next year. Girls who would have received their injections this year will get it next year along with a new group of Grade 7 students.

While conceding this delay may expose some girls to HPV, Rosella Melanson, the executive director of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women, said she understands the reason behind the department’s decision to postpone the vaccine program until next year.

Melanson said her group had been notified about the province’s decision beforehand.

“It is unfortunate that something else within health had to be sacrificed for the H1N1, but the H1N1 is certainly a greater risk for the population,” she said.

Comment from Leslie

Ok – if one believed in the vaccines…we are sacrficing girl’s health for the overall health of the people.  I get it.  That makes sense….Oh, wait though….maybe there is more money to be made in the latter market than in the HPV market…I get that too and that makes sense. Waht do you think?  Two years of pushing HPV vaccine – be one less blah, blah and the the whole campaign is dropped because Merck is too busy manufacturing flu vaccines – with a similar genetically modified virus that has caused so much damage to the Gardasil girls.  Maybe they are rushing to get this vaccine into the market before the public gets wise to this one too.   I get that one also.
