Lupus is an autoimmune disorder. This means that the body’s immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues by mistake. This can damage your joints, skin, blood vessels and organs. There are many kinds of lupus. The most common type, systemic lupus erythematosus, affects many parts of the body. Discoid lupus causes a rash that doesn’t go away. Subacute cutaneous lupus causes sores after being out in the sun. Another type can be caused by medication. Neonatal lupus, which is rare, affects newborns.
Which vaccines cause lupus?
- Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
- Hepatitis A (HAV) vaccines
- Hepatitis B (HBV) vaccines
- HPV vaccine (Gardasil)
- Influenza (TIV, LAIV)
- Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
- Meningococcal (MCV4, MPSV4)
- Pneumococcal conjugate (PCV)
- Polio (OPV or IPV)
- Rotavirus (RV)
- Tenanus (DTaP, Tdap, DTP-Hib, DT)
- Varicella (VZV)

My 16 year-old daughter has just been diagnosed with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus – horrible, raised, red rash across bridge of nose and on both cheeks – worse with sunlight. Never had the condition or anything like it before. However, last December (2010) had an Implanon birth control implant inserted into her arm. Wonder if that had anything to do with onset of this diagnosis. No such hereditary disease when searched through family – back couple generations. Also, she was the only one in our family of five to receive an influenza vaccine at her high school last year. Could implant or vaccination be causing this? If so, will removing the implant reverse the disease? Or what else can be done?
I am so sorry to hear this. Lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disorder as you know….it is possible that the vaccine tipped her toxic load – or it is also possible that the Implanon and the vaccine interacted…..or that the synthetic hormones in the Implanon triggered an endocrine/autoimmune reaction. However I just did a search for Implanon and lupus erythematosus and found this site….in just a few seconds.

Why is your daughter at 16 on synthetic hormones? Her endocrine system is way too young to be dealing with this….and that may be obvious with the onset of lupus. Also is she aware if she has sex she needs to use condoms for protection from STD’s?
And if she was put on Implanon to ‘regulate’ her cycles – the same can be achieved with simple tools, education, proper nutrition and hormone balancing.
