Girls in Africa perishing because of Virgins cure AIDS Myth
In Africa the myth that virgins cure HIV and AIDS has a traceable history and link to virgin related myths like virgins can make one rich, a girl’s breasts can make customers flood a shop just as breast milk comes out of it, a virgin girl’s blood has purifying effect on any disease and the list goes on.
The last decade has seen thousands of girls perish through rape as more and more traditional healers privately prescribe girls as cure for HIV and AIDS . The death toll though not traceable is certain to be a genocide on humanity of such a silent nature.
This has been a well knit venture involving high level community leaders and church leaders and the syndicate though not physically identifiable there have been confessions by perpetrators who came close to disclosing who and what exactly .
Betty Makoni the current President and Founder of Girl Child Network World Wide (GCNWW) handled and examined over 35 000 rape cases in 1998.
She safely concluded that the myth has spread its wings and it is so deep rooted and seated that to any man dying of HIV and AIDS ,virgins cure AIDS.
In one case Betty Makoni attended to in 2005 in a small town of Hwange a father had raped his daughter from age six to eight and each time he did so he tried to squeeze out blood out of the girl`s vagina.
In yet another case ,Betty tracked a record of 20 cases where one man raped 6-20 girls in search of the blood of the virgin which is believed to cure HIV and AIDS when mixed with certain herbs.
In one case in rural Manicaland, one perpetrator called Mudauri, raped girls aged between 3-6 years old because a witch doctor in Mozambique had convinced him that he would get rich and this is very related to the old myth now changed to curing AIDS .
Even Betty herself suffered rape as a child because a certain man who owned a small grocery shop in Chitungwiza next to her house believed that virgin girls could make him rich, his small business would grow big, customers would flood his shop to buy goods and just as much as everyone would love a beautiful girl.
The virgin makes you rich myth was very rooted among communities. Many girls had chilling stories of their fathers and uncles who demanded menstrual blood at knife point for magical purposes. The fact that after 1986, the myth spread far and wide was aggravated by the HIV and AIDS myth.
It was a mysterious disease and associated with evil and promiscuity and desperate efforts to get a purifying cure made witch doctors prescribe virgin girls as possible cure for HIV and AIDS. In 1998 the first case Betty Makoni dealt with was of a 14 year old girl raped by her mother’s boyfriend at knife point. The mother died of HIV and AIDS in 2000.
