Real World Data for Real Life Decisions – Take a Health Survey
By Chandler Marrs PhD
If you knew you had a 20 times higher risk of stroke or heart attack for one medication versus another, would you choose differently? I bet you would, but as medical consumers, we don’t have that information. In many cases, those data don’t exist or are not public, even to physicians or regulators. Recent reports suggest less than 50% of all medical treatments have any data to support their efficacy. Of that evidence, much could be suspect given the rampant payments from pharmaceutical and device companies to physicians and other decision-makers, plus the well-documented publishing bias and even fraud plaguing the scientific publishing industry. One BMJ study found the addition of unpublished trial data changed 46% (19/41) to show lower efficacy of the drug. Sit with that for a moment; because the pharmaceutical industry hides clinical trials data and only submits to regulators and publishers favorable results, the true safety and efficacy standards for any medication could be off by as much as 50%. That is unconscionable.
You can help change this situation. All you have to do is share your experience with a medication or surgery, anonymously. Your data will tell a story. If we add your data to those from 1000s of other individuals, we begin to get a clearer picture about which medications work or don’t, why, and for which patients. We’ll cull the data into trended reports and publish for patients and physicians to access.
