How to Naturally Treat Hormone-Related Migraines

Leslie Carol Botha: Article is dated – but the information is not. Found this article after a young woman posted a comment to my blog saying she was in her 6th of a hormone-related migraine coming off Depo Provera.  Thought more women could use the information.  If you are going to come off a hormone contraceptive make sure your body is nutritionally prepared. That way the hormone shifts will not be as severe. Truehope EMPowerplus is a  wonderful nutrient to strengthen the endocrine system and balance the hormones.

What causes hormonally triggered migraines?

Hormone triggered migraines are caused by an estrogen excess (estrogen dominance) and a progesterone deficiency.   Causes of excess estrogen include excess body fat, stress, excessive alcohol intake, environmental petrochemical intake,  and the intake of meat and dairy that have been treated with hormones.  This imbalance of estrogen to progesterone in your body can cause the above symptoms and potentially can lead to more serious diseases such as breast & ovarian cancer, infertility, and fibroids.

How do I know if I have an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone?  Some of the symptoms of excess estrogen in the body include:  weight gain in hips, thighs and breasts, irritability, low energy, headaches/migraines, fibroids and tenderness of the breasts.  Some symptoms of low progesterone may include:  low libido, spotting, obesity, facial hair, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, bone loss, foggy thinking, poor sleep and low thyroid function.

Natural treatment for hormonally-triggered migraines

1.  Avoid the intake of excess estrogens.  Buy only hormone- free meats and dairy.  Avoid putting lotions or cosmetics on your skin containing parabens and also commercially available sunscreens (use only mineral-based).  Use only natural cleaners and avoid pesticides.

2.  Acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas:  Chinese medicine has been used effectively for hormonal balance for over 2 thousand years.

3. Hormone saliva test kit:  your natural medicine practitioner will send you home with a test kit to monitor levels of either progesterone alone or estrogen/testosterone/DHEA/cortisol levels.
