Mapping the Maternal Brain

Holy Hormones journal: Finally, an article that I do not have to snark about, criticize, sound the alarm over – finally an article I can embrace with a resounding “Yes!” Mothering behavior does begin with BLW_Maternal_Affectionbiochemical reactions. The healthier the biochemical interactions, the healthier the emotions of mother – and the healthier the emotions are of a child.

I have blogged about this a lot. First a woman’s depressive state post pregnancy was called ‘postpartum depression’ – then the term became ‘postpartum psychosis’ and now ‘maternal mental illness’. These are labels. They go in your medical record… along with a barrage of psychotropic med prescriptions. And you still feel bad – and keep feeling worse. Many mom’s are taking these drugs while they nurse. That combined with synthetic hormones. All of that affects your biochemical state.

Let’s get to the basics. Every time a woman becomes a mother – her nutritional reserve becomes depleted. Ok – one snark – part of us still believes on some level that baby’s are delivered by the stork. Why do I say that? Because we have not gotten it through our heads that each pregnancy depletes vital micronutrients – that is what makes a baby. Those nutrients have to be replaced for a healthy biochemical/nutritional status. That is what affects the neurology of our emotions.
