On December 15, 2009 the CDC released a statement announcing the recall of 800,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine from the market. This was a story that should have received widespread coverage in the national media but, instead, largely died out at the local news level. Although some local stations made the recall their top story, many simply reported it as if it were no big deal and mentioned nothing else about it in subsequent broadcasts. Yet you would think that the recall of close to 1 million vaccines would spark the national interest, especially when the vaccines are for a “pandemic” that was initially supposed to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans and disrupt the entire society.

Throughout my examination of the Gardasil vaccine, there has been a steady flow of information, disinformation, and new developments. In my opening article, I wrote about the mandatory ruling in July of 2008 by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that would require all female green card applicants and immigrants between the ages of 11-26 to receive the Gardasil vaccine. Until recently, most people had never heard of the human papillomavirus (HPV). But in June, 2006, when the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it had granted approval to a new vaccine called Gardasil, public awareness of HPV began to grow. Gardasil, manufactured by the drug company Merck, is a vaccine that protects against four specific strains of the human papillomavirus, two of which are associated with genital warts and the other two with the development of cervical cancer.
Once Gardasil was approved, Merck began an intense media campaign to raise public awareness - and public fear - of HPV. The campaign was cleverly targeted at the parents - but particularly the mothers - of young girls, with the aim of igniting acute concern about cervical cancer. Mothers who felt that their daughters were at risk of a potentially deadly viral infection would rush to get their daughters vaccinated with Gardasil, and would pressure their elected representatives to include Gardasil in the panel of vaccinations that are required for school entry.

My daughter, age 15, received the 3 doses of Gardasil on December 28th, 2009. Within 10 minutes after the injection into her left arm she felt extremely dizzy, her eyes rolled back into her head several times, her head wobbled like a newborn baby who can’t support their head, she broke out in a sweat, her legs were like rubberbands and down she went!! Passed out even before reaching the exit door of her pediatricians office! She lay there twitching and shaking with seizure movements and the nurse took her blood pressure which was 92/30!!
