Immunologist Charlotte Haug, MD PhD, MSc and Editor-in-Chief, Tidsskrift for Den norske legeforening (The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association) raises an interesting question that has yet to be considered by the FDA, CDC or the medical community. What happens if other strains of HPV replace strains 16 or 18 after vaccination by Gardasil or Cervarix? If the vaccines are effective will the replacement viruses cause less disease or more disease?

A study by scientists at the University of Sydney and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead has found has found that some girls are missing out on the vaccination that helps protect against cervical cancer because of fears related to the vaccination process.

Cancer drugs rushed to the market via the FDA’s accelerated approval process often languish in confirmatory trials, agency researchers say.

Out of 47 indications granted fast-track status, benefits have not yet been confirmed in 21, mostly because trials are ongoing, according to John R. Johnson, MD, of the FDA’s oncology drugs office, and colleagues.

A study done at nine different schools in the Sydney metropolitan area published in the Medical Journal of Australia showed that many young girls had high levels of anxiety and fear when they’re offered Gardasil, a vaccine for HPV. “Sometimes this fear was so extreme it bordered on hysteria, with girls crying, screaming and fainting”, said lead researcher Rachel Skinner. “When this intense fear was witnessed by girls waiting to be vaccinated, the girls’ anxiety levels were heightened. Nurses had difficulty administering the vaccine to these girls, and this sometimes resulted in the girl not being vaccinated, despite their parents consenting to the vaccination”.
